New Insights from Accounting Today
Accounting Today has unveiled its latest research compilation titled
The Year Ahead: 2025 in Accounting, shedding light on the expectations, strategies, and concerns that public accountants will face as they transition into the upcoming year. Sponsored by Zoho, the report signals a blend of optimism and hurdles that professionals in the accounting sector will need to navigate.
Optimism in Revenue Growth
For the third consecutive year, accounting firms are projecting robust revenue increases for the year 2025. A significant
70% of firms foresee growth rates of
4% or more, with nearly
25% of them anticipating double-digit growth. Adding to the positive punch,
87% of those surveyed predict that the forthcoming tax season will unfold just as smoothly as the previous one or even better.
Challenges on the Horizon
Despite the celebratory figures, the report also brings to light some formidable challenges:
- - Struggles in Advisory Services: Although 49% of firms aim to broaden their advisory services, many are spending disproportionately less time on these aspirations than they originally anticipated throughout 2024. Compliance tasks dominate much of their time, consuming nearly 50% of their client-facing activities.
- - Hiring Hurdles: Around 52% of firms have plans to hire in 2025, but they are also bracing for ongoing difficulties in securing high-quality talent.
- - Technological Tensions: The landscape of technology remains a significant area of concern. Accounting professionals cite cost and cybersecurity as their primary technology-related worries. Currently, only 23% of firms are utilizing AI tools, indicating a considerable gap in tech adoption as a crucial industry component.
Janet King, the Vice President of Research at Arizent, encapsulates this sentiment by stating, "This illustration reveals a profession that is progressing but continues to grapple with significant inhibitors. Firms are finding it challenging to transition into advisory segments, and the rapid evolution of technology puts additional pressure on operational strategies."
Financial Planning Around Technology
Technology expenditures are projected to represent over
20% of firm budgets, with consistent patterns observed across firm sizes and types. Furthermore,
60% of firms forecast an increase in their IT spending for the following year—up
10% from the previous years, where only
50% of respondents envisioned raising their IT budgets.
