Soramed Launches AI SaaS for Operating Room Management in Acute Hospitals

Soramed's Revolutionary Launch

Soramed, a Tokyo-based company, has officially introduced its AI-powered surgical schedule management software as a service (SaaS) known as 'Opepro.' This innovative tool aims to optimize operating room efficiency in acute hospitals. After proving its effectiveness in a proof of concept (PoC) at a central hospital in western Japan, the company is now ready to implement the service across all surgical departments.

Background and Purpose

With the upcoming implementation of the doctor work style reform law in 2024, streamlining surgical operations has become a pressing necessity. Currently, operating room utilization rates in Japan's acute hospitals hover around 60%. This situation is exacerbated by individual, inconsistent management practices that burden doctors and hinder hospital operations. The non-standardized approach to surgical scheduling—often managed through paper or Excel—has created a data black box, leading to prolonged wait times for surgery and underutilized operating room slots. Soramed has taken on the challenge of addressing this issue by developing 'Opepro,' a cloud-based surgical schedule management service that maximizes resource use from a holistic perspective.

Features of Opepro

'Opepro' aggregates surgical scheduling information and visualizes the utilization of operating rooms, as well as the workload of physicians, all powered by artificial intelligence. Surgeons can input surgical schedules directly via an iPad, allowing for real-time sharing and analysis of data across a unified format for all surgical departments. This approach places physicians and staff at the core of decision-making while enabling AI to assist them with data analysis and recommendations, thereby facilitating precise decision-making.

The current operational focus includes data analysis and alert features, with plans to gradually expand the AI's functionalities to support optimizing surgical schedules and predicting resource demand. This enhancement will pave the way for efficiently sharing and reallocating unutilized operating slots, resulting in an increase in surgeries and a reduction of the workload on healthcare staff.

Proof of Concept Results

From March to September 2025, Soramed conducted a PoC in an advanced acute care hospital in western Japan, achieving significant improvements:

  • - Operating room utilization improved by 2.2%
  • - Reallocation of surgery slots resulted in an increase of 134 surgeries
  • - Administrative tasks for surgeons were reduced by 16.7%
  • - Impact on hospital revenue resulted in a gain of approximately 130 million yen

Following the positive results of the PoC, Soramed has begun rolling out its services to all surgical specialties at the participating hospital. The company anticipates that within three years, improved surgical revenue will contribute to an annual increase of 500 million yen—equivalent to over 500 additional surgeries per year.

Seed Funding Round

Simultaneously with the service launch, Soramed completed a seed funding round with Delight Ventures, which will expedite product development, enhance functionalities, and broaden marketing initiatives aimed at customer success. This strategic investment will help solidify the service provision framework.

Investor Insights

Shuhei Kawasaki, Managing Partner
Kawasaki expressed enthusiasm for joining Soramed: “I found the concept of Opepro intriguing when I first discussed it with CEO Koishi. After actively participating in its design, development, and deployment phases, I've seen the potential this product holds for transforming surgical operations into a more efficient and productive process.”

Yusuke Nagano, Principal
Nagano shared his excitement over the project's progress: “From the inception phase, I worked closely with Koishi to foster this revolutionary product. With only a small percentage increase in operating room efficiency translating into significant improvements in hospital revenues, Opepro addresses a critical social issue in healthcare.”

Founder’s Remarks

Koishi expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the first facility implementing the service, acknowledging the critical collaboration and shared vision to solve these pressing issues. He also extended gratitude towards Delight Ventures for their unwavering support in facilitating connections with healthcare professionals, ensuring that Opepro effectively addresses real-world challenges faced in hospitals.
