YUGEN Gallery FUKUOKA Hosts Group Exhibition 'Lives' in August 2026

YUGEN Gallery FUKUOKA to Showcase 'Lives'

From August 1 to August 31, 2026, YUGEN Gallery FUKUOKA will host an intriguing group exhibition titled 'Lives', exploring the depiction of living creatures from multiple artistic perspectives. Located in Fukuoka City, this exhibition promises to be an enriching experience as it features five prominent artists: Ado, So Ikegami, Tsukasa Kaneko, Yukiko Kurano, and Yoshie Kuroda.

Diverse Interpretations of Life

The exhibition centers around a seamless blend of the real and the imaginary, showcasing various dimensions of life forms, encompassing plants, animals, fungi, and mythical creatures. Each artist employs unique materials and techniques to convey their vision of ‘life’.

Ado: The Painter of Animal Essence

Ado, who has gained experience working in a Japanese zoo and participating in wildlife conservation in Kenya, is renowned for his ability to evoke the essence of life in his paintings. His depictions resonate with the presence and vitality of creatures, making viewers feel a deep connection through their gazes. Ado’s work encapsulates both tension and warmth, drawing the observer into a reflective encounter with nature.

So Ikegami: Fluidity in Glass

So Ikegami contributes to the exhibition with his innovative glass artworks that navigate the boundary between craft and contemporary art. Utilizing glass blowing and hot work techniques, he transforms the rigid properties of glass into flowing, ephemeral forms, which embody the energy of life through movement and process. His creations capture the transient nature of existence, illustrating that life is constantly shifting and evolving.

Tsukasa Kaneko: Echoes of Tradition

Kaneko specializes in ceramics, employing traditional Hagi ware techniques to explore the concept of mycelium, the underground network of fungi. His works evoke thoughts of life cycles and the interconnectedness of nature and humanity, prompting viewers to contemplate their own relationship with the environment through beautifully crafted pottery.

Yukiko Kurano: The Dynamic Nature of Botany

Known for her realistic representations of plants and bodies, Yukiko Kurano captures the ongoing transformations of flora in her paintings. Applying oil paint in a watercolor-like technique, she conveys the vitality of plants, emphasizing their constant change. Kurano finds beauty in the ephemeral, bringing forth a spark of hope as she illustrates the vibrant lifeforce inherent in nature.

Yoshie Kuroda: Art from the Discarded

Yoshie Kuroda performs a unique exploration by creating three-dimensional works called 'Mokemoke Animals' from discarded clothing. These imagined beings, whose seams remain exposed, connect to ancient Japanese beliefs about the power embedded in stitching. Kuroda's hand-sewn creations not only repurpose materials but also infuse them with new life, embodying a sacred practice of crafting.

The Dynamism of the Invisible

The exhibition is not merely about the physical forms represented by the artists but also delves into the underlying principles of the materials they use. Each work prompts reflections on the nature of life itself, revealing that the logic embedded within each material conveys profound messages about existence.

Ado’s paintings offer a depth of understanding, while Ikegami visualizes life as a process. Kaneko’s ceramics narrate the stories of time and relationships, Kurano sees plants as dynamic phenomena, and Kuroda’s works illustrate a prayerful embodiment of life.
