Yang Chaobin, the head of Huawei's ICT Business Group, highlighted the critical role of 5G-A during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in 2026, underscoring its potential to bridge generational gaps and unlock the full value of smart connectivity.

Yang outlined how the increasing reliance on mobile AI necessitates robust network infrastructures. With token utilization skyrocketing nearly 300 times over the past two years, he remarked, "The intelligent era is upon us. New AI applications are emerging every day, and it is time for our industry to unite and maximize the capabilities of 5G-A."

New Network Demands in the Mobile AI Era



For Yang, harnessing new frequency resources like U6GHz is essential to create new value within the industry and lay the groundwork for a transition to 6G. He elaborated on how networks need to focus not only on downlink but also offer ultra-high bandwidth for both uplink and downlink to facilitate multimodal data exchanges between devices and the cloud for AI applications. Security, reliability, and ultra-low-latency connections are paramount for real-time AI collaboration and informed decision-making.

Bridging Generational Gaps with 5G-A



The rapid evolution of AI is significantly closing the gap in network capabilities within the intergenerational window of mobile communications. Yang, emphasizing that 5G-A serves not only as a bridge between generations but also adapts its enhanced capabilities to the ever-shifting market demands, stated, "Huawei is dedicated to paving the way toward 6G, reflecting our commitment through efforts to achieve consensus on definitions, use cases, and potential technologies for 6G." With standards for 6G anticipated to emerge in 2029, Yang predicts that the next five years will be crucial for developing AI mobile services, driven by the advances of 5G-A.

He also noted the urgency for the industry to leverage 5G-A infrastructures effectively, aiming for a minimum of 10 Gbps downlink and 1 Gbps uplink connectivity while addressing new security concerns tied to investor returns in networks.

Addressing Global Imbalances



Yang raised awareness regarding the fact that 300 million people lack mobile coverage, highlighting that the digital divide may broaden with AI's advancement. Closing this gap necessitates ongoing innovation involving diverse spectrum portfolios and cost-effective solution designs. Huawei's innovative RuralStar system, deployed in over 80 countries, has connected 170 million individuals and improved digital education in Kenya through DigiTruck classrooms, facilitated community-level financial services in Bangladesh, and enabled telemedicine in Argentina.

Expanding 5G-A Solutions Utilizing U6GHz



With 5G-A's expansion to over 300 cities globally, the technology is poised for further leaps. Due to resource constraints in C-band frequencies across various regions, U6GHz is becoming a key enabler of increased network capacity, recognized as a primary band for future mobile communication following discussions at the WRC, and already supported by advanced 5G-A device chips and industrial infrastructures.

Yang concluded, "The intelligent era is accelerating. We must collaborate in the next five years to meet the demands of AI services through the widespread commercialization of 5G-A." This collaborative approach is vital for the industry to effectively address burgeoning AI requirements and tackle the reality of global disparities in connectivity.
