Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners Makes Significant Investment in Italian Biomethane with Via Verde Platform

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has officially announced its entry into the Italian biomethane market with a noteworthy investment in the Via Verde platform. This new initiative is a part of CIP's Advanced Bioenergy Fund II (ABF II), which focuses on the development and operation of biogas facilities throughout Europe. The aim is to transform agricultural waste and other sustainable materials into valuable biomethane.

The Via Verde platform marks a significant milestone as it comprises a development pipeline of 20 biomethane projects strategically distributed across Italy, targeting key regions such as Lombardy, Abruzzo, and Campania. Each of these plants is designed to process between 60,000 to 100,000 tonnes of agricultural waste each year. Once all projects are fully operational, they are expected to collectively produce around 1 TWh of biomethane annually—enough energy to satisfy the needs of roughly 60,000 Italian households.

Andreas F. Brandt, a partner at Copenhagen Infrastructure, expressed optimism regarding the opportunity presented by Via Verde. He stated, "This investment allows us to establish a strong foothold in one of Europe’s most promising biomethane markets, as Italy moves towards its targets for 2030. We will leverage our extensive bioenergy expertise to support Via Verde's skilled local team and their substantial project pipeline, setting the stage for sustained growth. Biomethane will play a crucial role in enhancing Italy's energy independence and aiding in its transition to a lower-carbon energy framework."

The establishment of this platform is specifically timed with favorable market conditions and supportive policy environments, positioning Via Verde to emerge as a leader in Italy’s burgeoning biomethane sector. The project not only aims to generate local employment opportunities but also seeks to enhance the production and availability of domestically sourced renewable gas, ultimately reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.

Additionally, the biomethane produced by the Via Verde platform is expected to significantly contribute to Italy's decarbonisation efforts. By substituting traditional fossil gas imports, this initiative aligns with broader national goals aimed at achieving greater energy autonomy and environmental sustainability. The investment is also indicative of the growing global trend towards renewable energy sources as countries and corporations increasingly prioritize sustainability and carbon reduction.

CIP's entry into the Italian market comes at a critical juncture, as the nation intensifies its commitment to renewable energy solutions, particularly in light of global shifts towards greener energy systems. The developments in the Via Verde platform could serve as a template for future investments in biomethane and other renewable energies across Europe and beyond. Overall, this initiative represents a collaborative push towards innovative energy solutions that enhance local economies while addressing climate change challenges.
