University of Missouri Launches Landmark Campaign to Tackle Global Issues

University of Missouri Unveils Historic Fundraising Campaign

The University of Missouri, also known as Mizzou, has embarked on an unprecedented journey by launching its largest fundraising campaign in the institution's 186-year history. This ambitious initiative aims to unite alumni, supporters, and partners to significantly impact education, research, community engagement, and health care.

A Transformative Vision

Officially kicked off by University President Mun Choi and endorsed by the Board of Curators, this campaign represents a pivotal moment for Mizzou. During the public celebration, Choi emphasized the importance of this campaign in helping the university evolve and contribute even more to society. He remarked, “This is a pivotal moment in Mizzou's history and a generational opportunity to expand our contributions to society.” The campaign, aptly named Power the Roar, has set an ambitious goal of raising $2 billion, placing it among the largest fundraising undertakings ever by a public university in the United States.

Focused Priorities for Impact

Power the Roar aligns with five core priorities aimed at enhancing Mizzou’s mission and expanding its influence:
1. Educating Future Leaders: Utilizing the renowned Missouri Method of hands-on learning.
2. Creating Life-Saving Medicines: Leveraging cutting-edge research to advance healthcare solutions.
3. Enhancing Agricultural, Engineering, and Scientific Expertise: Addressing pressing global issues.
4. Strengthening Communities: Fostering education and economic development within Missouri.
5. Developing Champions: Supporting student-athletes both on and off the field.

The campaign is uniquely donor-driven, encouraging contributors to influence university priorities and directly support initiatives they are passionate about. Chris Smith, Mizzou’s Vice Chancellor for Advancement, noted the enduring legacy of generosity that has characterized the institution since its inception. He stated, “Through philanthropy, they are making a tangible difference, empowering students, driving discovery, and creating opportunities that change lives.”

Early Successes and the Road Ahead

The quiet phase of the campaign commenced on July 1, 2022. To date, over 61,000 donors have already contributed nearly $760 million in support of various colleges and programs. The past year alone has seen an incredible rise in fundraising, with a record $269 million raised, showcasing the growing momentum behind the campaign.

Power the Roar is also supported by a dedicated volunteer campaign committee co-chaired by alumni Paul Vogel and his wife, Lynn Ann, from St. Louis. Vogel expressed confidence in the initiative, noting, “Alumni know firsthand the value of a Mizzou education and the lasting connections it creates for students, families, and communities.” Lynn Ann added, “It is an honor to serve alongside so many passionate alumni and supporters who share our love for this institution.”

The campaign serves not just as a financial endeavor but as a crucial means of enhancing the quality of education and fostering a brighter future for generations of students. Mizzou aims to uphold its commitment to transforming lives, fueling innovations in research, and strengthening its community, ensuring that it remains a leader in education and service for years to come.

In conclusion, with Power the Roar, the University of Missouri not only envisions a sustainable future but also galvanizes support that spans across various sectors, promising a considerable impact on both local and global scales.
