Exploring the Future of Space: A Symposium from Moon to Mars in Washington, DC

Upcoming Space Symposium: Science for a New Era

On March 26, 2026, the Universities Space Research Association (USRA), in collaboration with The Space Policy Institute of The George Washington University, will host the annual symposium titled "SCIENCE FOR A NEW ERA OF EXPLORATION - THE PATH FROM THE MOON TO MARS." This half-day event will occur at the Holiday Inn in Washington, DC, with an 1 PM Eastern start time, welcoming the media and prominent voices in the space community.

This year’s symposium is set to explore critical themes surrounding space exploration, with a particular focus on the transition from lunar missions to the ambitious goals of Mars exploration. This progressive dialogue is crucial as we approach a new age of scientific discovery and technological innovation in our pursuit of understanding the universe.

Agenda Highlights

Keynote Address: The symposium will commence with insights from Nicola "Nicky" Fox, NASA's Associate Administrator for the Science Mission Directorate. Following her address, attendees can look forward to several dynamic panel discussions addressing the key elements of future space missions.

1:40 PM - From Volatiles to Life: The Decadal Science Agenda

In this discussion, experts will delve into findings from the recent 2025 National Academies report, shedding light on our evolving focus from merely following water to actively searching for signs of life. Erika Wagner from The Exploration Company, Lucie Low of Axiom Space, and Bethany Ehlmann from UC Boulder will articulate the significance of lunar exploration as a stepping-stone for Mars.

2:30 PM - The Hardware and the Humans: Can We Deliver?

This panel seeks to address the technological advancements necessary for surface operations on the Moon and Mars. Led by Charles Powell from the Office of Science and Technology Policy and James D. Polk, NASA's Chief Health and Medical Officer, this session will highlight the multifaceted challenges of human health and safety, as well as the essential roles universities will play in workforce development for future explorations.

3:00 PM - Enterprise Integration from the Moon to Mars

Considering the collaborative efforts required for future expeditions, this discussion will address how government and private industries can integrate their efforts seamlessly for success. Experts, including Kevin Coggins from NASA's Space Communications and Navigation Program and Jonathan Lunine from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will share their insights on essential partnerships and interoperability.

5:15 PM - Closing Remarks and Discussion

Dr. Scott Pace from the Space Policy Institute and Dr. Elsayed Talaat, USRA's President and CEO, will summarize the day’s discussions, bringing forward critical conversations about where we stand and where we are headed in space exploration.

After the symposium, an informal reception will provide an excellent opportunity for networking among attendees. The event will also be live-streamed on Space Commerce TV, allowing for broader participation from those unable to attend in person.

Media professionals interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP by March 11, 2025, via email at [email protected] or by calling 443-812-6945. This event promises to be a significant milestone, marking a collaborative step into a new era of space exploration, as we venture further into the unknown and pave the way for future discoveries.
