Vaughn College's New Training Initiative Achieves 100% Success Rate for Air Traffic Controllers
Vaughn College's Enhanced Training Initiative for Air Traffic Controllers
In response to the growing demand for air traffic controllers, Vaughn College has taken significant strides by introducing an accelerated training program that has recently achieved remarkable results. Approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in April 2025, this initiative aims to mitigate the shortage of professionals in the air traffic control sector. With the program's inaugural cohort having completed their training with a perfect pass rate, excitement within the aviation community is palpable.
In the fall of 2025, nine students embarked on this rigorous two-semester training journey, all of whom have successfully passed the necessary assessments, representing a significant milestone for both Vaughn College and the FAA. This collaborative effort highlights the productive partnership between the institution and the governing body responsible for regulating air traffic in the United States.
A New Pathway for Aspiring Controllers
The Enhanced Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI) sets a new standard in aviation education by allowing graduates to directly enter FAA facilities for further training, thus bypassing the traditional FAA Academy located in Oklahoma. This advancement is pivotal considering the challenging requirements that the students were expected to meet, including passing the FAA's Air Traffic Skills Assessment exam and adhering to stringent medical and security protocols.
Dr. Sharon B. DeVivo, the President and CEO of Vaughn College, expressed immense pride in the achievements of these students. She stated, "The Vaughn community is incredibly proud of all nine students who are now well-educated and skilled to take positions as air traffic controllers with the Federal Aviation Administration. The success of these students reflects our commitment to quality education and the hard work put forth by our dedicated faculty and staff."
Since 1997, Vaughn College has been at the forefront of air traffic controller training and has consistently produced graduates who find employment in key aviation centers across the country, including LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International airports, as well as in facilities as far-flung as Miami and Hawaii.
Advanced Curriculum and Technology
To ensure that the new accelerated pathway meets educational excellence, Vaughn's training program underwent a thorough evaluation by the FAA. The review confirmed that the curriculum is not only of high quality but also taught by instructors with real-world experience as air traffic controllers. This fusion of theory and practice guarantees that students gain the necessary skills to navigate complex air traffic situations effectively.
The training program employs advanced high-fidelity simulation systems, which are vital for preparing students for real-life flight operations. These sophisticated tools, combined with expert guidance from skilled instructors, have allowed students to successfully navigate their evaluations with ease.
As Vice President of Training, Domenic Proscia, noted, "These students worked tirelessly using advanced high fidelity simulation systems under the close supervision of skilled instructors. They are now poised to be assigned directly into tower facilities to begin their careers as controllers. We are proud of them and those who will follow in their footsteps as we continue to prepare the next generation of aviation professionals who will contribute to the safety and efficiency of our skies."
Looking to the Future
Founded in 1932, Vaughn College offers a diverse array of programs in aviation, engineering, management, and technology, serving over 1,500 students. With its strong focus on personalized education—boasting a student-faculty ratio of 16:1—the institution has successfully positioned itself as a leader in the field of aviation education. Moreover, it supports a significant number of first-generation college students and has been recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education.
The recent success of Vaughn College’s air traffic control program serves as a testament to the institution's commitment to enhancing educational pathways and addressing workforce shortages in crucial sectors like aviation. With a strategic approach and innovative training methodologies, Vaughn College is paving the way for future generations of air traffic controllers and reinforcing its standing as a beacon of opportunity in the field.
