Celebrating Two Decades of Hope
This January, Orlando, Florida, is poised to be a hub of excitement as Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) celebrates the 20th anniversary of its endurance fundraising initiative, the Race to End Duchenne. Aimed at combatting Duchenne muscular dystrophy, this program has garnered remarkable support over the years, raising an impressive $18 million since its inception in 2005. The highlight of this weekend's celebration will be the participation of 185 team members in the 2025 Walt Disney World® Marathon Weekend, where each runner will honor loved ones affected by Duchenne.
PPMD's Vice President of Engagement, Nicole Herring, reflected on the inception of this impactful program, recalling the uncertain beginnings where 86 runners joined the ranks and raised over $86,000 in their first outing. The journey since then has been nothing short of extraordinary. "The Race to End Duchenne has evolved into a powerful pillar of support for families navigating the challenges of this devastating condition," she said.
With the funds raised through the Race to End Duchenne program, PPMD has been able to support vital research and therapy development, ultimately contributing to over $55 million invested in Duchenne research throughout the last 30 years. These investments have not only facilitated the approval of eight therapies but have also resulted in ten additional years added to the average lifespan of individuals living with Duchenne, showcasing the tangible impact of this fundraising initiative.
Pat Furlong, the Founding President and CEO of PPMD, expressed how the race has grown into a communal sanctuary for families faced with the isolation that a Duchenne diagnosis can bring. "This program has been more than merely a series of races; it serves as a lifeline, uniting families who share similar struggles. It cultivates a space for support and joy, celebrating the strength within our community."
As PPMD looks to the future, it recognizes the vital role that community involvement plays in their mission. Participating in events like the Race to End Duchenne not only fuels the fight against Duchenne but also reinforces the connections that have formed among individuals and families alike. Through cheerful camaraderie and shared goals, participants come together, running not just for their individual reasons but for the broader goal of ending Duchenne for everyone.
The anniversary is not just a cause for celebration but also an opportunity for reflection on the past two decades of incredible progress and resilience within the Duchenne community. Through the years, the Race to End Duchenne has become synonymous with hope, connection, and unwavering support in the relentless fight against Duchenne muscular dystrophy. PPMD extends its gratitude to all who have been part of this journey—be it through running, cheering, or donating—energizing the mission to end Duchenne.
