Huawei Releases White Paper on Next-Generation WAN to Transform Carrier IP Networks

In an era where digital transformation is critical, Huawei is taking significant strides to modernize the telecommunications landscape. During the Upperside World Congress 2026, the company launched its IP Gala summit centered around the theme ‘Next-Generation WAN, Boosting New Growth for Carriers’. At this event, they introduced a comprehensive white paper on Next-Generation WAN (NG WAN), which aims to reshape the architecture of IP networks by 2030. The document was presented with the participation of the World Broadband Association (WBBA), the IPv6 Forum, and key industry operators.

This new white paper outlines a strategic vision for operators, encouraging them to build fully secured networks that enhance user experiences while simultaneously promoting revenue growth and operational efficiency. Top global operators and industry leaders engaged in extensive discussions on critical topics such as multi-dimensional awareness, network resilience, security, and autonomy, collectively steering IP carrier networks towards a future defined by Net5.5G capabilities.

The Future of Networking

According to John Cai, President of Router Domain for Huawei’s Data Communication Product Line, the evolution of WAN networks revolves around three fundamental pillars: multi-dimensional awareness, security and resilience, and network autonomy. These components are vital for operators as they work towards enhancing network monetization while reducing operational costs and improving efficiency.

The NG WAN white paper provides a detailed roadmap, delineating key features, targeted architectures, value scenarios, breakthrough technologies, and construction specifications for IP networks leading up to 2030. It serves as a vital resource, equipping global operators with strategic insights necessary for innovation and development in network systems.

Leveraging AI and Next-Gen Technologies

The summit not only discussed Huawei’s vision but also showcased how industry leaders are embracing artificial intelligence and advanced technologies like IPv6 and SRv6 to maximize network potential, lower costs, and enhance performance. Latif Ladid, the president of the IPv6 Forum, emphasized that various nations are advancing strategies focused on sovereign clouds, AI-driven security, resilience, and quantum security, setting the foundation for operators to advance towards more complex infrastructure networks. The IPv6 Forum collaborates with global industry partners to foster the deep integration of cutting-edge technologies that can unlock the full potential of AI-enhanced applications.

Mehmet Durmus, Deputy Director of IP/MPLS Core and Data Networks at Turkcell, shared insights into their experiences implementing NG WAN. He noted that innovations such as 5G/5G-A and smart computing are placing mounting pressure on traditional networks. In response, Turkcell has become a pioneer in adopting state-of-the-art solutions, including lossless RDMA technology and AI-powered dynamic energy savings, which have led to landmark progress in intelligent computing, energy savings, and smart operation and maintenance. This endeavor has established a benchmark for next-generation IP carrier networks.

Building a Converged Future

Xu Huan, Vice President for Router Domains at Huawei, further elaborated on the foundational aspects and commercial value of NG WAN. He explained that it will focus on artificial intelligence and consist of a fully converged network architecture that integrates network, computing, and security services. This architecture will rely on a green, ultra-broadband foundation utilizing 400GE/800GE technologies, ensuring a robust and satisfactory service delivery to VIP users while increasing average revenue and data consumption per user through comprehensive security and resilience measures. In addition, the network will deploy agents to augment its autonomy.

As the summit concluded, experts presented innovative technologies and methodologies surrounding service awareness, targeted marketing, comprehensive security, resilience, and smart network management within home broadband scenarios. Huawei reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with global operators and industry leaders, aiming to unlock vast networking potential while driving sustainable growth for carriers.

This initiative not only exemplifies Huawei's forward-thinking approach but also significantly impacts the future of networking, paving the way for smarter and more efficient communications infrastructures worldwide.
