FAMIMA PARK AZABUDAI: A Unique FamilyMart Flagship Store Designed by Wonderwall®

FAMIMA PARK AZABUDAI: Redefining Convenience in Tokyo

In a remarkable evolution of the traditional convenience store experience, Wonderwall®, led by renowned interior designer Masamichi Katayama, has unveiled plans for the first flagship FamilyMart store, named FAMIMA PARK AZABUDAI. Scheduled to open on July 10, 2026, in the prestigious Azabudai district of Tokyo, this innovative location is set to change the way we perceive convenience retail.

A Collaborative Vision

FAMIMA PARK AZABUDAI is not just an ordinary FamilyMart; it is born from the Next FamilyMart Project, a collaboration with creative director NIGO®. This flagship store aims to embody the stylish yet functional essence of the FamilyMart brand, fusing over 50 years of convenience store evolution in Japan with a fresh, engaging atmosphere. This project recognizes the longstanding importance of convenience, transforming it into an enjoyable experience for customers.

Designing for Enjoyment

Wonderwall® seeks to elevate the ordinary by integrating delightful surprises into everyday shopping. The design philosophy emphasizes a “fun functionality,” creating a space where shoppers can both discover and enjoy products seamlessly. Rather than being just a place to grab items quickly, FAMIMA PARK promises to be a destination that excites and invites visitors to linger.

In order to extend the “exciting shopping” experience beyond the store walls, FAMIMA STAND and an open PARK area are featured outdoors, enabling customers to purchase products and savor them while enjoying the local atmosphere. This approach effectively reimagines the convenience store model, turning it into a more community-focused establishment.

Insights from Masamichi Katayama

Masamichi Katayama emphasizes the importance of blending practicality with pleasure in this groundbreaking project. He states, “While honoring the evolution and rationality of Japan’s convenience stores, we strive to pursue the enjoyment and abundance that lies ahead. It’s not just a place to stop by because it’s convenient; we want people to feel compelled to visit this location for its unique charm.”

Eight Design Concept Statements

In addressing this ambitious project, Wonderwall® set forth eight concept design statements that prioritize the richness and innovation of the convenience store experience. These statements guide the incorporation of customer interactions with products, the enjoyment of selection, and the connection to the surrounding community, all wrapped into a cohesive spatial experience. The concepts highlight the essence of what FAMIMA can uniquely offer:
  • - Changing and preserving tradition.
  • - Ensuring delight from start to finish.
  • - Creating a new environment that is both organized and enjoyable.
  • - Providing amenities and sufficient space to absorb the high-density experience.
  • - Transforming a simple eat-in area into a cafe ambiance.
  • - Inciting unexpected pleasant moments during the shopping experience.

Architectural Features of FAMIMA PARK AZABUDAI

Exterior Design

The store's exterior sets a precedent for how convenience stores are perceived, showcasing distinctive elements such as the official FamilyMart character sign and a “roof forest” that enhances the greenery of Azabudai. This corner building aims to become a new urban landmark, blending seamlessly into the environment while signaling its innovative offerings to passersby.

Interior Design

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of a pop-up store, filled with exclusive merchandise and popular items. The layout encourages exploration and engagement with products right from the moment you step inside. The checkout area is creatively designed as a kiosk corner, where shoppers can easily access various products, maintaining an enjoyable journey through to the end.

The convenience wear section takes center stage with a dedicated shop-in-shop concept, featuring the first-ever dressing rooms for convenience store clothing, creating a shopping experience akin to a boutique.

Additionally, a cafe counter enables customers to relish their purchases right on-site, seamlessly blending the street experience with indoor enjoyment.

Conclusion

FAMIMA PARK AZABUDAI represents a significant leap forward in the convenience store industry, offering a blend of functionality, joy, and community engagement. With its grand opening set for July 10, 2026, expectations are high for this flagship store to redefine what it means to shop at FamilyMart.
