The flight tests feature the 2025 Boeing ecoDemonstrator Explorer, based on United Airlines' Boeing 737-8 jet. Conducted over two weeks, these tests spanned both U.S. flights from Houston and transatlantic flights from Edinburgh, Scotland. The primary focus was to assess the Internet Protocol Suite (IPS) standards designed to upgrade communications with improved reliability and efficiency.

Boeing's Chief Technology Officer, Todd Citron, expressed pride in leading this project, highlighting its potential to significantly enhance both safety and operational efficiency in commercial aviation. Citron noted that the collaboration with United Airlines, alongside various industry partners, marks a pivotal step toward more effective communication channels in air travel. He remarked, "Our collaboration with United Airlines and the industry team is a pivotal step towards improving the reliability and speed of communication between the flight deck and air traffic control to enable safer, more efficient flight for the flying public."

Among the partners are Collins Aerospace, Honeywell, SITA, Thales, Viasat, the European Space Agency (ESA), and NASA. For instance, Nate Boelkins, president of Avionics at Collins Aerospace, stated that these advancements in data communications are essential for the performance of tomorrow's aircraft.
