Future Origins Hits Major Production Milestone with Nalo™
Future Origins has marked a significant achievement in sustainable manufacturing by successfully completing a large-scale demonstration for Nalo™, its innovative substitute for traditional C12/C14 fatty alcohols. These fatty alcohols are frequently used in essential products like laundry detergents and facial cleansers. On October 23, 2025, the company announced that they produced over 10 tons of high-quality, on-spec material at an integrated refining facility, a crucial step towards their goal of commercial-scale production.
John Gugel, CEO of Future Origins, expressed the importance of this successful demonstration, stating, "This important achievement validates the quality of our product and the robustness and scalability of our proprietary process technology." This milestone is not just a technical advancement; it also indicates a move closer to a Final Investment Decision (FID) for Future Origins' inaugural commercial manufacturing plant.
The Nalo™ produced during this demonstration will be shipped to both current and prospective partners for extensive testing across various applications within the home and personal care markets. This phase builds upon prior tests conducted by industry leaders such as Kao, Unilever, and L'Oréal, which focused on materials sourced from earlier pilot-scale production.
Kao's Senior Executive Officer, Daisuke Hamada, emphasized the significance of Nalo™ in meeting customer demands for sustainability: "Our goal is to deliver materials that are not only sustainably and reliably sourced, but also meet the high standards for our customers." With Nalo™, brands can enjoy both functionality and enhanced supply chain stability, making it an attractive choice for environmental-friendly initiatives.
Richard Slater, Unilever's Chief RD Officer, regarded Future Origins as a prime example of how innovation can transform supply chains, stating, "It's a milestone that reinforces our belief that through leading-edge science, we can create products that are both desirable and sustainable."
The performance of Nalo™ as a drop-in replacement for conventional ingredients was also highlighted by Galaxy Surfactants' executives. Their belief in Nalo's technical capabilities mirrors the industry's shifting focus toward sustainable practices.
Future Origins, established through a collaboration of industry powerhouses including Genomatica, Unilever, Kao, and L'Oréal, aims to revolutionize the market by supplying sustainable ingredients crucial for home and personal care products. Galaxy Surfactants has been instrumental in conducting independent product quality assessments throughout the process, ensuring that the scale-up aligns with industry expectations.
Looking ahead, Future Origins plans to manufacture Nalo™ at industrial scale in the forthcoming years. Notably, Kao has recently secured an offtake agreement, which covers a significant portion of the planned capacity for Future Origins’ first manufacturing plant, paving the way for widespread adoption.
Dr. Priti Pharkya, Chief Business Officer at Future Origins, stated, “The validation of Nalo by multiple partners and the successful completion of the demo-scale operations will accelerate the market momentum that Future Origins has experienced since late last year.” As the company sets its sights on the next development stage, it is clear that their path is firmly geared toward sustainability and innovation.
