Next250's Declaration of Interdependence
On September 3, 2025, at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, Next250 introduced its Declaration of Interdependence, celebrating the collective voices of over 2,500 individuals from various backgrounds across the United States. This influential document encourages citizens to unite for a promising future that reflects shared ideals, including equity, justice, safety, health, democracy, and sustainability.
Next250, a movement aimed at empowering all Americans, aspires to use this declaration as a foundation for mobilizing communities nationwide. The initiative will enable citizens to come together in advocating for policies that promote a thriving environment where every individual can succeed. As part of this endeavor, the organization is actively seeking signatories for the Declaration through its official website, emphasizing the importance of widespread support.
Linda Sarsour, executive director of MPower Change and a collaborator within Next250, underscored the core essence of the declaration by stating, "The Declaration of Interdependence is a reminder that America's strength has always come from our ability to come together." She highlighted that divisive tactics often aim to dilute the unified power of the community, but the desire for a welcoming and thriving nation remains resolute.
In these turbulent times, Next250 asserts that Americans share more common ground than is often perceived, a claim supported by findings from 40 listening sessions involving grassroots organizers from historically marginalized communities. Feedback from national polls also reflects a consistent set of shared values, indicating that citizens prioritize the same critical issues regardless of race, age, geography, or political ideology.
Next250 has articulated five key policy pillars emerging from this public input:
1.
Living Wage for All: Advocating for fair pay that meets the rising cost of living, ensuring that every worker can support themselves and their families.
2.
Climate Justice for All: Demanding sustainable practices and policies that address climate change's impact on disadvantaged communities.
3.
Health Care and Reproductive Rights for All: Supporting comprehensive healthcare access and protecting reproductive health choices for every individual.
4.
Common Sense Gun Reform for All: Calling for reasonable gun control measures to enhance public safety while respecting individual rights.
5.
Voting Rights for All: Ensuring that every citizen has the right to vote without unnecessary barriers, fostering a true democracy.
Saru Jayaraman, president of One Fair Wage and another collaborator with Next250, noted that a majority of Americans are aligned in their values and policy preferences, countering the narrative pushed by divisive forces seeking to create discord among the population. As the nation anticipates its 250th anniversary, this Declaration serves as a catalyst for a culture of inclusivity, emphasizing the importance of shared responsibility.
In conjunction with the declaration, Next250 unveiled “We Be Going An American Tapestry,” a mobile art installation designed by artistic director Wyatt Closs. This exhibit will travel to various town halls and events, intertwining narratives and symbols that highlight America’s diverse journey towards unity.
Next250 aims to further the dialogue and mobilization efforts throughout the coming year by organizing regional town hall meetings with elected officials and citizens. These discussions will anchor around the guiding question, "How do we make these collective values a reality?" As America moves forward in this critical juncture of history, Next250 calls upon all to engage with the Declaration and contribute to a future where everyone thrives.
