AMP's 2024 Sustainability Report Signals Progress in Environmental Stewardship and Transparency

Ardagh Metal Packaging Releases 2024 Sustainability Report

Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP), a notable global player in the sustainable metal beverage can industry, has unveiled its 2024 Sustainability Report. This document reaffirms the company’s resolute commitment to environmental responsibility, social impact, and transparent governance. Even though the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) of the European Union and the associated European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) aren't fully applicable to AMP at this time, the company has chosen to structure its 2024 report in anticipation of these standards. This proactive approach reflects AMP’s commitment to enhancing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) disclosures and maintaining responsible business practices.

In 2024, despite a 3% increase in sales volume, AMP demonstrated significant progress across its three main sustainability pillars: emissions reduction, ecological protection, and social equity. This success illustrates that business growth can coincide with sustainability.

Key Environmental Achievements in 2024

Renewable Energy

AMP increased its global renewable electricity use to 30%, with particularly notable improvements in specific regions: Europe at 46% and South America at 43%.

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions

  • - Scope 1 and 2: A notable 10% reduction in emissions compared to 2023, alongside an 18% decrease in emission intensity using a 2020 baseline.
  • - Scope 3: AMP achieved a remarkable 25% reduction based on a 2020 baseline, outpacing its own target set for 2030.

Circular Economy

The aluminum beverage cans produced by AMP contain an impressive average of 78% recycled content, a benchmark that stands out in the industry.

Waste Management and Water Use

Around 83% of AMP's facilities attained a Zero Waste to Landfill status. The company also improved its water withdrawal intensity by 5% compared to the previous year, marking a significant move toward more responsible resource usage.

Social Responsibility and Governance

In its report, AMP highlighted investments directed towards education, notably through its Ardagh for Education initiative, which contributed $5 million to STEM education across 20 communities, ultimately reaching over 75,000 students.

Furthermore, AMP earned recognition for its sustainable management practices, receiving an EcoVadis Gold Medal and earning a spot on the CDP A List for supplier engagement. The launch of the Ardagh Metal Production System (AMPS) signifies a commitment to improving global operational efficiency and integrating sustainability into every facet of its operations.

CEO Oliver Graham stated, "Our 2024 report reflects our continued investment in people, planet, and performance. We're proud of the progress we've made across all core pillars—Emissions, Ecology, and Social. We are dedicated to advancing sustainable packaging solutions and our commitment to ecosystems and the communities we operate within is unwavering. Together, we strive to ensure aluminum plays a significant role in a sustainable economy where circularity becomes a tangible reality rather than a mere aspiration.”

The report also serves as a complementary document to AMP's 2025 Communication on Progress (COP) to the UN Global Compact, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to ESG principles.
