Celebrating Values of Integrity: The Fair Play Menarini International Award 2026

Honoring Courage and Humanity in Sports

The Fair Play Menarini International Award has become a symbol of integrity and humanity in the world of sports. This year, the award is set to celebrate the inspiring actions of three remarkable young athletes who demonstrated extraordinary sportsmanship and selflessness, showcasing that true victory lies in values beyond mere competition.

During a press conference scheduled for June 4th, held at the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) in Rome, the stories of these athletes will be told, as well as those of champions slated to receive awards at the grand event on July 2nd in Florence. The narratives of the Young Athletes Award winners reflect a shared ethos of fairness and solidarity that the Fair Play Menarini Award has praised for the past 30 years.

Acts of Integrity

This year’s first award winner, Alberto Belluzzi, a young fencer from Italy, turned a competitive moment into a lesson on integrity during the Under-23 Championships in Caorle. Upon discovering a mistake that awarded him an extra victory—a mistake that could have disqualified his opponent from succeeding in the next round—he promptly reported the oversight to officials. His dedication to fairness demonstrated that he valued his competitor's opportunity over personal gain, exemplifying the true spirit of sports.

Gloria Tinaburri, another award recipient, made headlines during the Endurance World Championships in France. Amidst the heat of competition, she halted her own race to assist a fellow competitor who had fallen and was injured. For 40 minutes, Gloria exhibited remarkable composure and quick-thinking, securing both horses and riders while coordinating rescue efforts before ultimately resuming her competition. Her actions shone a light on the importance of empathy and support among athletes.

Lastly, Matteo Pasqualetti, a young volleyball player, embodied loyalty and fair play during an emotionally charged moment in the Under-13 finals. In an intense match situation, he voluntarily admitted to a referee oversight regarding a block touch that favored his team. This act of sportsmanship meant sacrificing an advantage for the sake of fairness, showcasing the true essence of competitive spirit.

Celebrating Achievements

Reflecting on the accomplishments of these young athletes, board members of the Fair Play Menarini Foundation, Luca Lastrucci, Valeria Speroni Cardi, and Filippo Paganelli, praised the trio for their integrity and selflessness. They stated, "Through their actions, Alberto, Gloria, and Matteo have demonstrated extraordinary integrity and selflessness that play a vital role in shaping the future of sportsmanship. The spirit that drives these three young athletes is the very same spirit that the Fair Play Menarini Award has been celebrating for thirty years."

As the excitement builds for the upcoming 30th edition of the Fair Play Menarini International Award, the stage is set for a night to remember on July 2nd at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. This event not only recognizes these young champions but also highlights the values they represent. In a world where the competitive spirit often overshadows camaraderie, their actions serve as a powerful reminder that true victory is rooted in fairness, respect, and compassion.

The Fair Play Menarini International Award is positioned as a beacon for future athletes, encouraging them to hold integrity and mutual support at the forefront of their sporting endeavors. The stories of Alberto, Gloria, and Matteo, alongside the legends who will also receive recognition, reaffirm that humanity within sports is essential for fostering growth, both personally and collectively.
