Canadian Energy Metals Pioneers New Alumina Production



Canadian Energy Metals Corp. (CEM), a forward-thinking company in the energy sector, has launched groundbreaking advancements in the production of metallurgical-grade alumina from non-bauxite sources. This notable achievement stems from the company's ongoing project, known as project Thor, which is located to the northeast of Saskatchewan, near the town of Tisdale.

CEM recently announced positive results from its efforts to extract strategic and critical metals from black shales associated with project Thor. This innovative approach validates the production processes necessary for achieving high-purity alumina, a vital raw material in aluminum metal production. The company has successfully demonstrated that the alumina produced from these new sources meets the same purity and technical specifications as that produced through the Bayer process, which has been the standard in the industry.

In addition to validating its new production methods, CEM has officially commenced a prefeasibility study (PFS). The PFS aims to provide robust economic and technical analyses that define mining, refining, and smelting processes; reinforce resource estimation reliability; establish preliminary capital and operating costs; evaluate logistics, infrastructure, and market options; and determine the project's commercial viability for advancing to a comprehensive feasibility study (FS).

The groundwork for this initiative includes a feasibility demonstration conducted in January 2026, focusing on the recovery of high-purity alumina and chemical-grade alumina from the black shales within project Thor. In May 2026, the company released a preliminary economic analysis (PEA) that evaluated the potential profitability of producing high-purity alumina products from discovered shales.

This crucial feasibility demonstration for smelter-grade alumina expands the product development perspectives for project Thor and aligns with CEM's broader goal of establishing a domestic source of alumina-based products and essential strategic metals. Given the current global supply chain disruptions, CEM's ability to create a secure North American supply chain—from resource extraction to transformation and delivery to clients—is a critical differentiator and foundational element of its strategic value proposition.
