Recap of the End-of-Life Seminar at Noda Hotaru Rose Garden
On May 30, 2026, a free seminar titled "Understanding End-of-Life Planning" took place at Shokeiji within the Noda Hotaru Rose Garden in Chiba Prefecture, organized by Zenpokoenfun Co., Ltd. This event attracted a total of 31 participants, including registered guests from our 'Kofun Window' service. Together, they enjoyed insightful discussions on essential end-of-life topics amidst the blooming roses of early summer.
Event Overview
The gathering on this beautiful day in late May brought together individuals interested in end-of-life preparations, ranging from those who had already purchased a Takeda-style Kofun grave to those considering their options. The seminar was led by our Legal and Customer Service department member, Yabeh, who effectively covered three critical themes related to end-of-life planning, providing practical insights and real-life examples.
Theme 1: "Grave Relocation and Memorial Services"
The first topic addressed the increasing trend of "grave relocations" or "bokujimai" in Japan. Statistics from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare indicate that approximately 176,000 relocations occur annually, presenting a significant social issue. We framed grave relocation not as an end, but as a positive transition—an "immovable navigation" towards continued remembrance of the deceased. Participants learned about the procedural flow for relocating graves, including anticipated costs and necessary notifications to authorities, aiming to alleviate common apprehensions regarding the complexity.
The Takeda-style Kofun grave features an eternal memorial service, providing a supportive option for families after grave relocation.
Theme 2: "End-of-Life Planning for Singles"
The second theme focused on planning for individuals who may find themselves alone, whether due to living alone or not having children. Many couples must confront the reality that one partner will eventually outlive the other, reinforcing the necessity of being prepared for a time when one might be on their own.
We discussed vital subjects like the posthumous task delegation contracts (entrusting third parties with funeral and other procedures) and organized methods for managing emergency contacts and estate arrangements. Participants resonated with the idea that planning in advance can significantly lower the burden on their families, allowing for a more peaceful daily life.
Feedback included comments like, "This was my first opportunity to think about my own situation personally."
Theme 3: "Adult Guardianship System"
The third and final theme explored the "Adult Guardianship System," which serves as a safeguard for individuals whose judgment may decline due to dementia or illness. However, many participants were unaware of the differences between statutory and voluntary guardianship.
We emphasized the importance of choosing a guardian while still capable of doing so, highlighting how voluntary guardianship allows individuals to select trusted companions or professionals for managing their assets and well-being. Many shared that they were aware of the term but lacked clarity on actionable steps.
Complimentary Resource Distribution
Participants received a complimentary copy of our original brochure, "Understanding End-of-Life Planning Handbook," designed to provide foundational knowledge pertaining to end-of-life procedures, costs, and expert consultation methods. We structured the brochure with diagrams and checklists to facilitate comprehensible reading at home, with many expressing interest in sharing it with family.
Participant Feedback
Post-seminar surveys revealed overwhelmingly positive responses, with over 90% of attendees finding the content clear and understandable. Furthermore, around 83% expressed interest in attending future seminars.
Comments included reflections such as:
- - "I'm glad I came here. I feel reassured."
- - "This was a meaningful opportunity to contemplate my future."
- - "Thank you for the thoughtful guidance and valuable chance to deliberate about end-of-life planning."
“Future topics noted by attendees include specifics regarding posthumous task delegations, detailed procedures for grave relocations, and comprehensive breakdowns of costs. We appreciate your insights and look forward to providing deeper content in future seminars."
