Sport GOMI Event in Yamagata City
On June 14, 2023, Yamagata City in Japan witnessed a unique initiative called
Sport GOMI, aimed at raising environmental awareness and fostering community spirit. Organized by a collaborative effort among various local entities, including Hoosiers Living Service, the Yamagata City Development Corporation, and the OH, ONE!? student committee from Yamagata University, the event attracted 121 participants divided into 33 teams. The aim was clear: to collect as much garbage as possible from predetermined areas while having fun and competing for points.
What is Sport GOMI?
Sport GOMI combines the spirit of competition with environmental responsibility. Participating teams set out to collect trash within designated zones, earning points based on the type and amount of litter they gather. The event transformed waste collection into an engaging sport, encouraging teamwork and community involvement.
On this particular Saturday, the teams, ranging from children to adults, began their cleanup journey at the commercial facility ‘Nanokamachi Rutasu’. Over the course of the day, the energetic groups successfully gathered a total of 24.7 kg of waste. The excitement of the competition resonated throughout the day, with radio personality Aya Matsuura serving as the lively host and the beloved Yamagata City mascot ‘Hanagata Benichan’ making a special appearance to cheer on participants.
The Community Impact
This event wasn't just about collecting trash; it was designed to boost local community pride and awareness. Teams participated not only in the cleanup effort but also engaged in educational activities related to local history, culture, and landmarks through quizzes created by the Yamagata University
