WIOCC Group Secures Major Investment to Enhance Digital Infrastructure Across Africa

In a significant move for Africa's digital landscape, WIOCC Group, a leading carrier-neutral digital infrastructure platform, has announced that the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) is set to join Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and Vision Invest as an investor. This partnership, unveiled during a roundtable event at the Global Africa Business Initiative, held alongside the UN General Assembly in New York, aims to accelerate the expansion of vital digital infrastructure throughout the continent.

The investment comes at a critical time when the demand for data, cloud services, and artificial intelligence is soaring. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), internet usage in Africa stood at only 35.7% in 2025, starkly contrasting with the global average of 73.6%. This disparity highlights the urgent need for robust digital infrastructure across Africa, indicating vast potential for growth and development in the digital sector.

The collaborative investment will bolster WIOCC Group's long-term growth strategy, allowing for expansions in both terrestrial and subsea networks, enhancing data center capacities, and broadening the digital infrastructure platform. This effort targets improved connectivity, increased digital access, and enhanced local hosting capabilities, essential for fostering a more inclusive digital environment on the continent.

Chris Wood, CEO of WIOCC Group, emphasized Africa's unique position to leverage the next phase of global digital transformation. "As the demand for cloud computing, AI, and digital services accelerates, having robust infrastructure is paramount to fully unlocking the continent’s capabilities. This investment enhances our capacity to expand and improve our digital platforms faster, meeting the rising needs of our customers, businesses, and communities across Africa."

The partnership not only reflects the commitment of AFC, Vision Invest, and DFC to strengthening infrastructure but also aims to address the ongoing digital divide. Samaila Zubairu, President and CEO of AFC, outlined the necessity of building a connected and competitive Africa that can generate value from the digital economy. He remarked, “Just as transport corridors enable trade and energy networks power industries, digital infrastructure has become an essential cornerstone for innovation and economic growth.”

Furthermore, the investment also aligns with emerging trends in the global AI market, projected to reach a staggering US$4.8 trillion by 2033, alongside rising demands for enhanced connectivity and solutions across various sectors. WIOCC’s capability as a digital enabler is vital as it operates in over 30 African nations, supporting businesses with access to extensive markets and premier digital services.

Collaboration among these diverse investors signifies a growing international consensus on the strategic importance of open-access digital infrastructure for Africa’s economic transformation. DFC’s Chief of Staff, Conor Coleman, highlighted that their investment will contribute to building trusted and resilient digital frameworks essential for Africa's economic prosperity. Moreover, it will facilitate American and allied partner companies in tapping into one of the most dynamic markets globally.

This strategic investment collaboration emphasizes innovation, growth, and economic diversifications that are indispensable in unlocking new opportunities across Africa. Given the continent is projected to have the world's youngest population and to account for over a quarter of the global population by the year 2050, the escalating demand for digital services underscores the urgent need for impactful investments in connectivity solutions.

Joshua Smythwood, Group Chief Strategy and MA Officer of WIOCC Group, remarked that this successful financing round significantly improves the group's financial standings, empowering them to address evolving market demands and deliver sustainable value for stakeholders. With joined efforts and resources pooled together from AFC, Vision Invest, and DFC, this collaboration is designed to support the ongoing expansion of Africa's digital ecosystem and enhance the continent's role in the global digital economy.

Thus, the convergence of these strategic investments showcases a proactive approach towards digitization and economic growth, reaffirming the belief that the future of Africa lies in its capacity to innovate and integrate within the global digital economy. The alignment of developmental goals within these investor organizations fosters a robust framework for a thriving digital future in Africa, positioning WIOCC Group as a pivotal player in this transformative journey.
