Runners from Around the Globe Unite at the 2025 Hainan (Sanya) Marathon

On December 28, 2025, the lively atmosphere of the 7th Hainan (Sanya) Marathon kicked off at 7:00 a.m. local time, starting from the picturesque South Gate of the Sanya Beauty Crown. This year’s marathon attracted an impressive number of 14,000 participants hailing from 19 countries and regions worldwide, alongside athletes representing all 34 provinces across China. Nearly 68% of the runners traveled from outside the Hainan Free Trade Port, highlighting the event's international appeal.

A Scenic Course Design

The marathon maintained its signature course for 2025, guiding participants through Sanya’s stunning coastal urban core. The full marathon culminated at the beautiful Sanya Bay Coastal Park, while the half marathon had its finish line at the renowned Tianya Haijiao Scenic Area. The design aimed not only to challenge the runners but to showcase the breathtaking landscapes and the unique local culture, offering a true discovery experience where tropical beauty and local character intersect.

In addition to individual races, the marathon featured team competitions and a special category for couples called “Running Hand-in-Hand to Tianya Haijiao.” The competitive spirit was heightened with substantial award funds exceeding 500,000 yuan, awarded across six categories for various achievements, including individual placements, course records, and Hainan Free Trade Port-based athletes.

Comprehensive Safety Measures

Safety was paramount at this year's marathon, with an extensive medical support system in place. A dedicated team of 253 medical staff, 100 automated external defibrillator (AED) units, 26 ambulances, and three designated hospitals formed a robust three-tier medical system. Race operations were managed by more than 3,500 personnel, ensuring adequate hydration stations and mobile facilities throughout the route.

Digital Engagement and Community Building

Highlighting a commitment to modernity, this year’s marathon integrated extensive digital engagement strategies. The organizers issued 30,000 limited-edition digital commemorative medals secured by blockchain technology, providing participants with a lasting, verifiable record of their achievement. Runners were able to claim their medals through popular platforms such as Alipay’s Jingtan and Ledongli services.

Furthermore, a virtual race was featured on Alipay, DingTalk, and Amap, attracting over 27,000 participants and generating an impressive average of 4 million daily impressions. This virtual race seamlessly connected physical competitors with the digital world, expanding the marathon's reach.

Yang Yong, the General Manager of Events and Commercialization at Orange Lion Sports, one of the event’s key partners, emphasized the marathon's role in promoting Hainan as an international tourism and consumer destination. He noted, “Together, we celebrated running while reinforcing Sanya’s appeal as a vibrant sports and tourism hotspot, connecting global runners through engaging digital experiences.”

With the success of the 2025 Hainan (Sanya) Marathon, the event not only showcased the athletic prowess of participants but also underscored Sanya's growing significance as a premier location for sports tourism.
