California American Water Urges Customers to Conserve Water During Hot Summer Months

California American Water Encourages Efficient Water Use

As summer temperatures rise in California, California American Water is taking proactive measures to encourage its customers to adopt wise water usage practices. With weather predictions forecasting hotter and drier conditions, the utility company emphasizes the importance of conserving water not just during the summer but as a daily commitment.

Sarah Leeper, President of California American Water, stated, “Wise water use is more than a seasonal concern, it’s an everyday commitment.” She highlighted that even small actions taken at home can lead to significant conservation efforts, ultimately helping to protect local water resources.

To assist residents in practicing more environmentally friendly habits, California American Water offers several practical tips for outdoor water usage:

1. Water Timing: It's advisable to water lawns or gardens early in the morning or later in the evening to minimize evaporation. It’s noted that as much as 30 percent of water can get lost due to midday watering.
2. Rainwater Collection: Rain barrels can be an effective tool for capturing rainwater, which can then be utilized for irrigating outdoor plants and gardens.
3. Sprinkler Checks: Residents are urged to inspect their sprinkler heads to ensure that water isn't dispensed onto pavements or areas where it isn't needed.
4. Hose Alternatives: Using a broom instead of a hose for cleaning patios, driveways, and sidewalks can conserve a significant amount of water.
5. Mulching for Retention: Mulching garden beds helps to retain moisture, and a layer of two to three inches can prove very effective in preventing weed growth.
6. Lawn Care: Setting mower blades higher promotes drought resistance; grass cut between 2.5 to 3.5 inches tends to be healthier and more resilient.
7. Leak Detection: California American Water also stresses the importance of checking for leaks, as small leaks can waste as much as 90 gallons of water a day.

To help residents track their water usage, California American Water provides a portal named MyWater, accessible online. This platform allows customers to access their water consumption data over the past two years, learn about budget billing, and explore various customer assistance programs.
