Berlin Packaging Recognized Among America's Greenest Companies for 2027 by Newsweek

Berlin Packaging Honored as One of America's Greenest Companies for 2027

Berlin Packaging, leading the market as the world's largest Hybrid Packaging Supplier®, has received notable recognition as one of America's Greenest Companies for 2027, according to a report by Newsweek, the Plant-A Insights Group, and GIST Impact. This achievement marks the second occasion the company has been included in this esteemed list, following its success in 2025.

This year’s list, which identifies 650 of the most environmentally responsible companies in the United States, is drawn from a pool of 6,000 companies that were initially reviewed. Out of these, over 1,700 met the rigorous eligibility criteria set forth in the assessment, which evaluated businesses on more than 25 different factors categorized into four main areas: greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, waste generation, and overall commitment to sustainability.

A Testament to Sustainable Practices
In remarks made by Bill Hayes, Global CEO and President of Berlin Packaging, he explained that this recognition is a reflection of the significant strides the company is making toward incorporating sustainability into its core operations. “Brand owners have evolved their inquiries from simply asking whether packaging can be more sustainable to pressing for how to expedite these efforts, make informed choices, adhere to new regulations, and showcase continuous progress. We have the unique opportunity to set benchmarks and assist our clients in turning their aspirations into actionable results,” Hayes stated.

Berlin Packaging is consistently pushing forward with its sustainability strategy, which aims to minimize the ecological footprint of its operations while also guiding clients through the complexities of sustainable packaging in today’s market. The company's extensive global packaging expertise, combined with its unique Sustainability Services and the Studio One Eleven® design and innovation team, empowers brands to assess their materials, enhance packaging efficiency, integrate recycled content, promote circularity, and develop solutions aligned with their sustainability objectives.

Significant Progress Reported
In September, Berlin Packaging published its 2025 Sustainability Report entitled Built for Tomorrow, which highlighted key accomplishments in sustainability, including:
  • - Validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near- and long-term targets regarding greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
  • - Procurement of 5,581 MWh in renewable energy credits across the Americas and EMEA, translating to 100% of its electricity needs being met through renewable sources for its Americas operations.
  • - A supply of 14,810 metric tons of post-consumer recycled materials, reflecting a 14% increase over the previous year.

Balaji Jayaseelan, Vice President of Sustainability at Berlin Packaging, emphasized that sustainability isn't merely a metric that Berlin uses to report progress. Instead, it intimately influences investment strategies, capability developments, and value creation for customers adapting to shifting regulations and consumer expectations. He stated, “Sustainability is a driving force behind our growth. It determines the direction we take regarding investments, capability improvements, and the ways we add value for customers navigating changing regulations, retailer expectations, and consumer demands.”

Evaluation Methodology
Newsweek's America's Greenest Companies list employs a methodology that assesses the performance of companies relative to their respective industries, with greenhouse gas emissions accounting for 50% of the total score. Water usage and waste generation also comprise 20% each, while commitment and disclosure contribute the remaining 10%. This comprehensive evaluation considers emission intensity, reduction strategies, renewable energy use, water and waste intensity, and sustainability disclosure practices.
