Shanghai Electric Drives Iraq's Energy Future with 625 MW Capacity Enhancement



In a significant move towards energy sustainability, Shanghai Electric has initiated an expansive project to modernize power generation facilities along the Euphrates River in Iraq. This ambitious venture, which aims to upgrade the efficiency of existing power plants, is set to enhance the overall electricity generation capacity by 625 megawatts (MW). It promises to combat the persistent power shortages that have plagued Iraq for decades, a feat that is particularly critical in light of the country's ongoing recovery and development efforts.

The modernization project involves the upgrade of power plants across four governorates in Iraq, transforming older simple cycle units into more advanced combined cycle systems. This shift is expected to improve the efficiency of these plants by approximately 50%, yielding an additional 5 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually, all without the need for increased fuel consumption. By harnessing cutting-edge technology, the project aims not only to curb electricity shortages but also to foster a more stable energy future for the Iraqi populace.

The urgency of enhancing Iraq's energy security is accentuated by its position as a major oil producer in the Middle East, yet it continues to face significant electricity deficits. With the majority of its power generation reliant on natural gas, delayed domestic gas development has led to an over-dependence on imports. This ongoing shortfall presents challenges to the daily lives of citizens and hinders the country’s broader economic recovery and growth.

Under the aegis of Shanghai Electric, construction commenced earlier this year and encompasses governorates including Najaf, Karbala, Babylon, and Al-Qadisiyyah. The focus of these upgrades is firmly placed on utilizing advanced technologies tailored for electricity generation in combined cycle setups. Initial equipment shipments have already arrived at the project sites, and the construction process is underway, marked by the collaboration between Chinese and Iraqi engineering teams. The project has garnered significant interest from both the Iraqi government and the public, recognized as a critical investment in the region’s energy infrastructure.

Ziad Ali Fadel, Iraq's Minister of Electricity, has underscored the project's strategic importance by stating, "This initiative is vital for enhancing electricity supply in Iraq and optimizing our energy infrastructure. The implementation of these upgrades will effectively reduce our dependency on imported natural gas and lower fuel costs associated with electricity generation.”

Specifically at the Najaf power plant, modernizations are centered around utilizing high-temperature exhaust from existing gas turbines as a source of heat. The exhaust gases are rerouted through heat recovery steam generators, producing high-pressure steam that subsequently drives a new steam turbine, thereby generating additional electricity. This combined cycle process not only boosts efficiency but also minimizes thermal pollution emanating from the original units.

Naseem Ayad, the Iraqi project manager at the Najaf facility, expressed optimism, stating, "Chinese equipment and energy technologies are enabling us to re-utilize high-temperature exhaust gases, thus increasing our output while simultaneously reducing thermal pollution. This project sets a standard for power plant modernization in Iraq and fulfills the community's hope for more reliable electricity and improved living conditions.”

At the Karbala plant, essential equipment such as heat recovery steam generators and air-cooled condensers have already been delivered. This phase marks one of the first significant investments in Iraq's combined cycle power plant expansions, featuring fully utilized Chinese equipment and standards, with primary systems designed and manufactured in China. This move is anticipated to expand the presence of Chinese equipment in foreign markets and promote the recognition of Chinese standards within Iraq.

Upon completion, the project is expected to elevate the living standards of local communities, support post-war reconstruction efforts, and lay a solid foundation for industrial revival and economic growth in Iraq.
