Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Celebrates Mental Health with Bluebikes Credits

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Supports Mental Health Initiatives with Bluebikes

In an effort to promote mental well-being, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is providing a unique initiative to local riders. Celebrated on October 10, World Mental Health Day inspires a weekend of cycling and community connection from October 9 to 11. Blue Cross Blue Shield, as the title sponsor of the popular Bluebikes system, is offering a $15 credit that riders can use for bike rides across the vast 13-municipality Bluebikes network.

How It Works

From October 9 onwards, riders can redeem a $15 credit by entering the code BCBSHEALTHYOCT in the Bluebikes app. This offer is available while supplies last and enhances the biking experience within Greater Boston. Each credit can support approximately 1 to 2.5 hours of riding time, allowing riders to enjoy the convenience of biking while exploring their communities. Once claimed, the credit remains valid for one full year, making it accessible for riders to utilize over a range of dates.

The motivation behind this initiative is to highlight the importance of physical activity outdoors and social interaction that cycling can foster. To culminate these efforts, Blue Cross will sponsor Ride & Chill, a community biking event set for October 11 at the scenic Franklin Park. This free activity focuses on family fun, featuring group bike rides, essential safety training, and entertainment throughout the day.

Community Connection through Biking

Jeff Bellows, the Vice President of Corporate Citizenship and Public Affairs at Blue Cross, emphasized that the goal is to encourage individuals to step outside, engage in physical activity, and connect with their neighbors. “Whether it's taking a solo ride to relieve stress on World Mental Health Day or participating in the Ride & Chill event, we're fostering community through biking,” he explained. With opportunities for all ages, the initiative is designed to create lasting memories while promoting a healthier lifestyle.

Mayor Michelle Wu expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Our aim is for every Boston family to be engaged in health and wellness initiatives. The Ride & Chill event is an excellent platform to bring locals together for a day of fitness, community bonding, and enjoyment.”

The Impact of Bluebikes

Since its inception, Bluebikes has expanded significantly, boasting over 5,500 bikes and 600 stations throughout eastern Massachusetts. As the title sponsor since 2018, Blue Cross has played an essential role in promoting biking as a primary form of transportation, pushing forward accessibility through free rides and reduced membership costs. This initiative aims to draw attention to the collective health benefits associated with biking, which contribute to community vitality and individual wellness.

With more than 25 million rides recorded, Bluebikes is an emblem of public transportation innovation in urban landscapes. The bike-sharing system reflects a commitment to sustainable transportation, operated under the guidance of Lyft, and tailored to meet the needs of the Greater Boston community by being an affordable and effective transport option.
