Japan Road's Commitment to Revitalizing Coastal Forests
On May 28, 2026, in a significant effort to restore the coastal disaster prevention forests in the Arahama area of Sendai City, Japan Road entered a partnership agreement, marking the second round of revitalization activities since November 2025. This initiative is part of a larger movement that began in 2014, aiming to rehabilitate the coastal forests severely damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The Miyagi Prefecture has been actively promoting the "Miyagi Coastal Forest Restoration - Everyone's Forest Creation" activity to ensure the revival of these crucial coastal forests. Japan Road is dedicated to this cause, and notably, the company's younger employees from the Tohoku branch have been instrumental in planning and participating in these projects since the fiscal year 2025.
During the event, Japan Road’s Tohoku branch manager, Takeshi Hosoda, led a group of 28 employees who engaged in essential tasks such as vegetation removal and the dismantling of old static sand fences that had outlived their purpose. These actions not only provide a healthier environment for trees to thrive but also contribute to maintaining the region's disaster prevention capabilities.
What are Static Sand Fences?
Static sand fences play a vital role in preventing flying sand and protecting planted trees. They help reduce wind speed, restrict sand movement, and safeguard young seedlings from being buried or damaged by shifting sand. The proper management and restoration of these fences are critical for the success of coastal reforestation efforts.
Although the weather was humid and less than ideal on the day of the event, participants were driven by a strong sense of mission to safeguard the local natural environment, supported by guidance from the Miyagi Prefectural Forest Instructors Association. The experience not only fosters a bond between employees and their communities but also enhances awareness of environmental conservation among younger generations.
Commitment to Sustainable Practices
Japan Road remains committed to deepening its collaboration with local communities and actively pursues environmental conservation activities aimed at achieving a sustainable society. The revitalization of coastal disaster prevention forests represents an ongoing journey, one that symbolizes hope and resilience for the region.
Looking Ahead
With the establishment of "Japan Road's Hope Forest" in the Arahama area of Sendai, there is a shared vision to continue the restoration of coastal disaster prevention forests. Future events will further promote community engagement and focus on preserving the region's ecological integrity.
