NOK's Innovative Showcase at the 2025 Yokohama Automotive Exhibition
NOK Corporation, headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, is set to participate in the upcoming "2025 Yokohama Automotive Technology Exhibition". This event, organized by the Japan Society of Automotive Engineers (JSAE), will take place from May 21 to May 23 at Pacifico Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture. It presents a unique opportunity for NOK to introduce five newly developed components specifically designed for electric vehicles, catering to the evolving needs of modern mobility.
A Glimpse into NOK's New Developments
1. Tracking-Resistant Rubber
One of the highlights of NOK's exhibition will be the debut of their newly developed tracking-resistant rubber. This innovative material is engineered to mitigate tracking phenomena in high-voltage environments, achieving the maximum Comparative Tracking Index (CTI) of 600 per JIS standards. By converting this rubber into shaped components with sealing functions, manufacturers can achieve space-saving around inverters and motors while reducing the number of parts required. The rubber's base can also be customized to possess water and oil resistance, depending on the application.
2. High-Speed Bi-Directional Oil Seals
NOK will also unveil a new bi-directional oil seal designed for high-speed operations, employing the innovative "VF screw" technology. This seal maintains its integrity at speeds of up to 50 m/s in both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions, which is approximately 2.5 times faster than conventional oil seals. Its unique V-shaped protrusions effectively collect oil, while optimized shapes ensure durability and excellent sealing even after wear. These seals are ideal for electric vehicle motors and robotics.
3. Low Torque, Low Leak Seal Ring
Designed for applications requiring hydraulic retention, NOK's low torque, low leak seal ring features a textured shape with deep grooves that facilitate oil supply while assuring a streamlined housing fit. Compared to previous models, this product achieves approximately 70% reduction in torque and halves leakage.
4. RUSTECTOR Coating for Aluminum Anti-Corrosion
The introduction of the RUSTECTOR coating adds a saltwater corrosion-resistant function to gaskets used in aluminum casings for electric vehicles. This coating fills in surface roughness, thus enhancing corrosion resistance. NOK proposes two types of gaskets: a rubber gasket and a "soft metal" gasket with rubber bonded to a steel sheet.
5. Multi-Path Switching Valve Seals
These seals utilize a unique combination of rubber and low-friction materials, achieving outstanding sealing performance with low torque for smooth flow switching. By minimizing surrounding components, NOK's design optimizes the use of limited thermal energy. Two variants will be presented: a rotor-type and a disc-type seal.
6. QLEASE Thermal Management Components
NOK's QLEASE series comprises thermal conductive materials designed for effective heat management in devices. The clay-like materials are capable of conforming to irregular shapes, efficiently dissipating heat. Compound products combining clay and rubber, tailored to specific use cases, will also be showcased. Additionally, the exhibit will feature an insulating thermal conductive resin that excels in high heat transfer and thermal resistance, making it suitable for parts that require high performance under temperatures up to 220°C, such as connectors and bus bars in motors and inverters.
