Hermeus Announces Leadership Transition
In a significant leadership reshuffle, Hermeus has appointed Zach Shore as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective June 1, 2026. This comes as AJ Piplica, the company’s founding CEO, transitions to the role of Executive Chairman. Hermeus is known for its advancements in defense aviation, particularly in developing the world’s fastest operational aircraft.
This leadership evolution follows a remarkable period for the company, marked by a substantial $350 million Series C funding round, contributing to over $500 million in total private capital raised to date. The company’s strategic growth has seen numerous contract wins and successful flight campaigns, leading to a need for a leadership structure that aligns with both the operational and strategic demands of a rapidly evolving aerospace sector.
Zach Shore, who has been with Hermeus for four years and most recently held the position of President, has been instrumental in driving the company’s growth. His track record includes securing defense contracts and fostering strong relationships with customers, alongside enhancing operational functions across all departments. Shore’s deep understanding of the business and commitment to delivering exceptional value is seen as vital to propelling the company forward.
AJ Piplica commented on the transition, stating, “Scaling a defense aviation company requires a relentless focus on execution. Zach has demonstrated his capability in navigating the complexities of rapid growth. This transition allows us to leverage our combined strengths, with Zach guiding the business and myself focusing on long-term strategic initiatives.”
As Executive Chairman, Piplica will continue to serve as a guiding force at Hermeus, overseeing the Board of Directors while maintaining an active role in daily operations. His focus will be on capital strategy, addressing potential challenges, and nurturing partnerships with investors and customers, which are critical in today’s competitive landscape.
Zach Shore expressed his enthusiasm about assuming the CEO role, stating, “Hermeus is at an inflection point. We are currently managing more simultaneous initiatives than ever before. My primary goal is to ensure that we deliver the capabilities our warfighters need and that we effectively scale our operations.”
This change in leadership structure comes ahead of Hermeus’s anticipated supersonic flight campaign for its Quarterhorse aircraft, set to launch imminently. The shift aims to consolidate the company's strengths, enhancing efficiency while ensuring the ambitious goals of the aerospace venture are achieved.
