Booost Inc. Takes Charge of Japan's Carbon Reduction Initiatives

Booost Inc., renowned for its No.1 share in the market for Sustainability Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), has received a significant contract from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). The project involves the implementation of the 2024 international conference on carbon reduction and aims to establish a data-sharing framework for calculating and assessing the carbon emissions from manufacturers of screws and bolts. Through this initiative, Booost will not only provide essential guidance on the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) but will also revise calculation guidelines relevant to this area.

Background of the CBAM

The EU introduced CBAM as a response to potential carbon leakage, which refers to the scenario where companies relocate their production to countries with less stringent emission regulations. The mechanism imposes fees on specific high-emission imported goods. As of October 2023, importers are required to report the carbon emissions associated with their imported products, serving as a transition phase before the official implementation begins in January 2026.

Specific products like screws and bolts, categorized under steel and aluminum products, will fall under CBAM regulations. As a result, manufacturers will need to report their embodied carbon emissions, either through verified actual data or according to the default values established by the EU. The first reporting is mandatory by September 2027, based on the import volumes from 2026.

Recognizing the urgency, METI plans to develop and implement calculation guidelines by February 2024, utilizing updated methodologies for equivalent emissions calculations and investigating data sharing along the supply chain..

Overview of Booost’s Responsibilities

In its substantial role within this project, Booost will carry out several key tasks:
1. Update the calculation methods for embodied emissions per product.
2. Explore data connectivity for embodied emissions throughout the supply chain.
3. Develop strategies for the official operationalization of CBAM.

Particularly, Booost will conduct informative sessions on the latest CBAM regulations and revise the calculation guidelines specific to screws and bolts accordingly.

Future Outlook

As part of its commitment, Booost plans to organize informative workshops on the CBAM regulations in December 2025 and March 2026. Moreover, it aims to release the third edition of its guidelines for calculating embodied emissions by the following March, focusing on the screw and bolt industry and outlining key considerations for the impending reporting deadlines in 2027.

Through this contractual undertaking, Booost aims to facilitate the dissemination of the latest CBAM information while aiding the continuous adaptation of the calculation guidelines to support domestic participants.

In parallel with this project, Booost is also refining its own Sustainability ERP, known as "booost Sustainability," which complies with international standards. This platform is designed to assist Japanese companies in integrating sustainability data into their decision-making processes, thereby advancing sustainability transformations and enhancing corporate value.

The Sustainability 2026 Challenge

Many businesses currently face the Sustainability 2026 issue, characterized by a delay in addressing the mandatory disclosure of sustainability-related financial information owing to a lack of urgency. This scenario poses risks to corporate value if not addressed promptly. To tackle this challenge, Booost launched the "Japan as a Leader in Sustainability Transformation" initiative in November 2024. This project includes events and support initiatives catered to both operational staff and executives, reinforcing the urgency of developing robust sustainability frameworks by 2026.
