CenterPoint Energy Completes Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative Phase Two



In a significant achievement ahead of the 2025 hurricane season, CenterPoint Energy has finalized all planned resiliency improvements as part of the Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative (GHRI) Phase Two. This major accomplishment positions the company to enhance its service reliability for millions of customers across the Greater Houston area.

Over the past 10 months, CenterPoint Energy has demonstrated its commitment to bolster infrastructure resilience against severe weather patterns. The extensive upgrades included installing over 26,000 stronger, storm-resilient poles, undergrounding 400 miles of power lines, and adding more than 5,150 automated devices to self-heal and maintain the electricity grid. Moreover, the utility company has proactively cleared over 6,000 miles of high-risk vegetation around power lines to minimize disruptions during storms.

Additionally, for the first time, 100 advanced weather-monitoring stations were established across the Greater Houston region, providing critical data to bolster the company’s storm preparation and response efforts. These comprehensive enhancements will collectively lead to reducing customer outage times by more than 125 million minutes annually, a crucial factor in maintaining the region’s operational and residential energy needs.

The Path Forward


As the hurricane season approaches, Houston residents can feel more secure knowing that substantial strides have been made in infrastructure improvements. CenterPoint Energy is set to reveal additional strategies and plans for the GHRI in early June, outlining their continued commitment into 2025 and beyond.

This initiative began as a response to Hurricane Beryl, which highlighted vulnerabilities within the electrical grid that needed addressing. The measures taken during both Phase One and Phase Two not only serve as immediate responses to current threats but also establish a long-term strategy for future preparedness.
