The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) held its annual State of the Travel & Tourism Industry event, where it unveiled these impressive statistics to an audience of over 600 industry stakeholders, government officials, and community leaders. The event, held at the scenic Jungle Island, celebrated the area's thriving tourism landscape and reiterated its role as an economic powerhouse.

In 2024, Miami-Dade emerged as the leader in hotel occupancy in Florida and ranked in the top tier of the U.S. hotel market, scoring fourth for occupancy rates and third for average daily room rates among the nation's 25 largest markets. Notably, both domestic and international visitors increased by 2% and 4%, respectively, compared to the previous year, reflecting the area's growing appeal across different demographics. The tourism surge is not solely a byproduct of leisure travel but is significantly fueled by the meetings and conventions sector, as well as iconic events that enrich Miami's cultural tapestry. Recently, groundbreaking occurred for the 800-room Grand Hyatt Miami Beach convention center hotel, slated to open in 2027. This project is anticipated to enhance Miami's capacity to attract high-profile global events, conventions, and business meetings while simultaneously promising to reinforce the city’s readiness for large-scale celebrations.

The GMCVB spoke highly of the tourism and hospitality sectors' vital roles in maintaining Miami-Dade's status as a top global travel destination, cherishing its unique neighborhoods and cultures. David Whitaker, President and CEO of GMCVB, stated, "Our focus is on ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for visitors while getting residents and businesses to reap the benefits of our thriving tourism landscape. The more than $31 billion in economic impact signifies a robust 9% of Miami-Dade's GDP, showcasing an impressive 5% growth from 2023."

As Miami-Dade transitions into 2025, strong growth in hotel room demand remains evident, with many weeks outperforming the same periods of the previous year. The first four months indicated that properties in Greater Miami and Miami Beach retained top position in both revenue per available room and overall occupancy rates.

Among the key developments that propelled the sector's robust performance was the GMCVB's innovative marketing strategies and community engagement efforts. Countries leading international visits include Colombia, Brazil, and the United Kingdom, with annual growth figures hitting 8%, 12%, and 10% respectively. Notably, the convention sales team exceeded goals by securing 16 new bookings for events at the Miami Beach Convention Center. This success translated to an incredible estimated economic impact of over $131 million.

Additionally, the strategic marketing teams have employed social media outreach that contributed to @VisitMiami becoming a fast-growing platform, enhancing visibility for a plethora of local offerings and experiences. The revamped Miami Spice program aims to align Greater Miami's culinary profile with its Michelin-recognized status, focusing on influencer partnerships to boost engagement.

Sustainability initiatives are also gaining traction, with 71 local hotels pursuing Green Key certification to meet high international sustainability standards. These measures reflect Miami-Dade’s commitment to environmentally responsible tourism and access for all visitors, particularly with the goal of achieving 'Destination Verified' status for travelers with disabilities.

In celebrating Miami's diverse cultural offerings, programs like the Tourism Business Enhancement initiative have supported 147 small businesses, enhancing the overall vibrancy of the tourism economy. Events such as the Calle Ocho Music Festival, Latin GRAMMYs, and Art Basel Miami Beach have played substantial roles in drawing visitors, with exciting future events including the FIFA World Cup and NHL Winter Classic on the horizon.
