BD Celebrates 55 Years of Manufacturing Excellence in Sumter, SC

On October 3, 2025, Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) is commemorating a significant milestone—55 years of impactful manufacturing at its Sumter, South Carolina facility. This site has been a cornerstone of BD’s extensive manufacturing network across the United States and globally since it first opened its doors in 1970.

A Legacy of Growth and Commitment

BD Sumter started its journey with just 25 dedicated employees who produced the first glass syringe barrel. Over the decades, the facility has evolved into one of BD's largest and most strategically vital sites, now employing around 900 associates and operating over an expansive 600,000 square feet. Each year, the Sumter facility produces billions of medical products that are indispensable in the healthcare ecosystem including the renowned BD Vacutainer® blood collection systems.

This production is critical, especially in diagnostics, treatment, and medical research, providing products that are trusted to care for 84 patients every second around the globe. Bridget Bagnato, the Worldwide President of Specimen Management at BD, emphasized the significance of the Sumter facility during the anniversary celebrations. She noted, "For more than five decades, our team in Sumter has taken immense pride in delivering high-quality products that support patient care globally."

Significant Investments to Drive Future Growth

BD has demonstrated a solid commitment to its operations in Sumter by investing over $90 million since the fiscal year 2021 with the aim of expanding its manufacturing capabilities. In a bold move, this investment has tripled year-over-year, and there’s an anticipation of an additional $30 million allocated for further operations in FY26. The funding is earmarked for updating infrastructure, adding new manufacturing lines to enhance output, and improving associate training and development, which is a part of BD's larger five-year investment strategy. BD is committed to exploring high-speed and next-generation technologies that will continue to boost the facility's capabilities.

Celebratory Events Marking the Milestone

To honor this remarkable anniversary, BD organized a celebration ceremony that brought together company leaders, local government officials, and community members. The event highlighted the contributions of long-serving employees, including two staff members commemorating over 50 years with the company. Additionally, over 100 individuals have dedicated more than 25 years of service to BD, showcasing the loyalty and commitment within the workforce. Furthermore, as part of its community engagement, BD announced a significant $10,000 donation to the Tuomey Foundation, which represents BD’s ongoing efforts to support local health advancements and community welfare. Annually, BD also contributes over $100,000 to various organizations in Sumter, including the Sumter Education Foundation and local branches of the United Way and American Heart Association.

According to the Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III, "BD's more than five decades of growth, innovation, and ongoing success is a testament to its leadership and the strength of South Carolina's business environment." He expressed gratitude for BD’s further investments in Sumter County, looking forward to the company’s legacy continuing to flourish.

In addition to this landmark, BD is preparing to celebrate the 65th anniversary of its manufacturing facility in Broken Bow, Nebraska later this month. With more than 30 sites across 17 states and Puerto Rico, BD employs over 10,000 individuals whose efforts forge a vital backbone for the medical device supply chain in the United States and internationally.
