Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital Opens First Phase of Emergency Department Renovation

Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital Unveils New Emergency Department Phase

On June 26, 2026, Montefiore Health System celebrated a significant milestone with the inauguration of the first and largest phase of its Emergency Department renovation at Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital. This expansion comes as part of a substantial capital investment of $41 million granted by the state of New York, aimed at transforming hospital facilities to enhance community healthcare delivery.

The renovations have introduced crucial improvements to the Emergency Department, including 11 additional patient beds, two triage rooms, and an isolation room. These enhancements are designed to manage patient care more efficiently, ensuring that individuals receive appropriate attention based on the severity of their medical conditions. Besides the medical facilities, the upgrades feature a new security vestibule, a waiting area, and dedicated spaces for staff, including a break room, changing rooms, and administrative offices.

Mount Vernon's Mayor, Shawyn Patterson-Howard, expressed pride in this community achievement, stating, “Together, we have shown how, as a community, we can ensure that the residents of Mount Vernon receive nothing less than the best care, administered by top doctors and professionals in the most modern facilities.” The mayor emphasized that this renovated department symbolizes their commitment to building a healthier future for local families and friends.

The project is expected to continue expanding, with additional phases of renovation slated for completion in the latter half of 2027. Once fully finished, the Emergency Department's footprint will nearly triple in size, successfully doubling its capacity to accommodate between 40,000 and 50,000 patient visits annually.

The unveiling of the renovated Emergency Department follows closely after the modernization of the Family Health and Wellness Center at Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital, which was also made possible by the same capital investment from New York State. This comprehensive renovation has enabled the center to offer a wide range of specialties, delivering excellence in care across elements such as cardiology, gynecology, and neurology.

Regginald Jordan, Vice President of Clinical Services and CEO of both Montefiore Wakefield and Montefiore Mount Vernon, pointed out, “Primary and specialty care is the gateway to health, while the Emergency Department stands as the main entrance to our hospital.” He added that the completion of these initial phases meets the evolving healthcare needs of the Mount Vernon community and significantly enhances access to medical services.

Looking to the future, the Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital plans to advance renovations for its operating rooms as well, ensuring state-of-the-art surgical facilities. These improvements will provide local residents with more surgical options close to home, addressing a critical need in the area. The entire reformation project is on track for completion by 2027.
