Lifesum Study Finds TikTok Snacking Disrupts Gen Z's Sleep Patterns
A recent study conducted by Lifesum, a prominent healthy eating application, has unveiled a striking trend among Gen Z users: the phenomenon of "TikTok snacking." This term refers to the behavior where young adults munch on snacks while scrolling through TikTok at bedtime, a habit that poses significant risks to their sleep hygiene. According to the research, nearly two-thirds of young adults reported eating in bed while engaged with the app, with data indicating that this behavior has supplanted traditional stress as the primary disruptor of sleep quality.
The study highlighted that approximately 60.1% of Gen Z individuals indulge in snacking while using TikTok, a behavior framed as “TikTok snacking.” This dual activity of scrolling and eating predominantly occurs in the evening, potentially leading to a multitude of negative implications for sleep health. Moreover, the findings suggested that the types of snacks consumed are evenly divided between sweet and savory options, with comfort rather than nutrition being the driving force behind these late-night munchies.
When participants were queried about their most significant sleep disruptors, scrolling through TikTok emerged as the leading culprit, with an alarming 29.5% of respondents citing it as their primary barrier to restful sleep. This revelation underscores a dramatic shift in digital consumption habits among young adults, indicating that late-night activities are increasingly dictated by online behaviors rather than self-care practices. In the past, stress, anxiety, and overthinking were high on the list of sleep disruptors, but now it seems that screens are keeping Gen Z awake.
Victoria Strandlund, a nutritionist affiliated with Lifesum, noted that sleep has transformed from a sanctuary of rest to a continuation of the day's pressures, with modern life’s demands heavily influencing young adults’ routines. She advocates for minor lifestyle adjustments that can significantly enhance sleep quality, such as minimizing screen time before bed and being more conscientious about food choices late at night.
The impact of this study extends beyond mere snacking habits, illustrating a deeper connection between sleep, mindfulness, and nutrition. Lifesum’s research aligns with the company’s recent partnership with Calm, a leader in mental health resources. Both entities aim to leverage their unique expertise to foster healthier routines among users through engaging content that emphasizes the importance of mindful eating and sleep.
In addition to the findings about TikTok habits, the study also examined other factors disrupting sleep. Nearly half of the participants (47.7%) noted that having pets in bed often disturbed their sleep. Meanwhile, stress-related factors, including arguments and excessive thinking, were cited by more than half of respondents, with 14.2% experiencing these disturbances nearly every night. Other lifestyle elements, such as alcohol and caffeine consumption, also featured prominently in affecting sleep quality. The study found that over a quarter of respondents reported consuming alcohol close to bedtime, with significant portions of them also admitting to caffeine intake in the evenings.
Shifting focus back to social media, almost half (47.9%) of Gen Z and millennials indicated they scroll TikTok or other platforms while in bed each night, contributing to an overall lack of adequate sleep. The intertwining of technology and personal health unveils a complex relationship that increasingly defines modern living, particularly among younger generations.
