Blackathon: A Fusion of Fun and Engineering Innovation
On June 6 and 7, 2026, Yuraku Confectionery Co., Ltd. held its first hackathon event known as "Blackathon" in Akihabara, Tokyo. This event was inspired by the popular chocolate snack, Black Thunder, inviting engineers and creative minds to participate in a vibrant competition focused on innovative ideas to make enjoying Black Thunder an integral part of their coding process.
With an initial expectation surpassed, the hackathon attracted an impressive 318 participants forming 106 teams. After a stringent selection process, 20 teams comprising of 69 participants geared up for two days of energetic development. The teams, which included software and hardware engineers, designers, and marketers, passionately worked on various projects revolving around the theme "Ideas that make engineers crave Black Thunder while developing."
Black Thunder Driven Development (BTDD)
Participants were introduced to a novel development style dubbed "Black Thunder Driven Development" (BTDD) that incorporated enjoying Black Thunder while coding. Throughout the event, attendees could indulge in unlimited Black Thunder, contributing to an engaging atmosphere. A post-event survey revealed an outstanding participant satisfaction rate of 98.4%, with a staggering 95.2% believing that Black Thunder and engineering go hand in hand, and 85.7% expressing interest in adopting BTDD in their future projects.
Creating an Engaging Environment
The venue also featured exciting activities aimed at enhancing the enjoyment of development. One of the standout attractions was the unlimited Black Thunder eating station, where participants consumed an astonishing total of 891 bars—averaging about 14 bars per participant. The best individual record registered was 40 bars consumed. Many participants praised the experience, noting, "It’s fantastic to take a sugar break without leaving my keyboard!" highlighting how seamlessly Black Thunder complemented their work sessions.
Moreover, creative incentives were established throughout the venue. A wall adorned with Black Thunder-shaped cards offered attendees a chance to win development-supporting gadgets, from Black Thunder cooling packs to high-resolution monitors, creating a lively and supportive environment for all teams.
Everyone was given event-exclusive Blackathon T-shirts, stickers, and a box of Black Thunder, fostering a sense of community and identity among participants as they collaborated on their projects proudly wearing the brand's colors.
Showcasing Innovative Creations
Following two days of intense development and creativity, all 20 teams presented their unique projects during the final session, showcasing not just technical skill but also a playful approach in many cases. The standard of many creations exceeded expectations, drawing laughter and applause from the audience. Several teams were recognized with various awards based on criteria such as creativity, visual appeal, and the overall fun factor associated with Black Thunder.
Grand Prize Winner:
Project Name: BTDD Machine – An AI-powered snack delivery device
Team: Beavers Hive
Project Overview: This unique device incentivizes engineers with Black Thunder as a reward based on their token usage. Once certain limits are reached, it automatically dispenses the treats, innovating the way developers experience snack time while maintaining focus on their work. The structure was designed meticulously to ensure everything—from cutting the packaging to delivering the bars—was automated.
Special Awards Recap:
A range of fun and creative concepts received awards, including the "Whimsical Idea Award" for a game that creatively incorporated the unique shapes of Black Thunder bars, and the “Overflowing Passion Award” for a dating simulator inspired by a developer's relationship with his candy-loving girlfriend. Each winning team highlighted their dedication and the fun they had while creating their projects.
Looking Ahead to Future Events
The event, characterized by the blend of technology and culinary joy, set a high benchmark for future hackathons aiming to incorporate fun with engineering and creativity. The success of Blackathon illustrates a promising landscape for engaging engineers in an innovative and playful manner, a testament to the strength of community and collaboration.
With heavy excitement surrounding the event, feedback from judges and participants alike showcased a hopeful future for similar events, as they were left amazed by the ingenuity on display.
