Get Ready for American BBQ Cook-off 2026 and Backyard Festival in Tokyo

Embrace the Smoke: American BBQ Cook-off 2026 in Tokyo

Tokyo is set to host an exciting culinary event on March 20, 2026, at Harumi Terminal Park. The "American BBQ Cook-off 2026" and the accompanying "HARUMI Backyard BBQ Bash" will showcase incredible barbecue skills and mouth-watering tastes from across the country.

A Celebration of American BBQ

This marks the third iteration of the American BBQ Cook-off, a thrilling competition where seasoned pitmasters unleash their culinary prowess. Participants will spend six hours meticulously preparing American Pork Back Ribs using the iconic “Low and Slow” smoking method. This technique, central to American BBQ, involves low-temperature cooking over a long period, allowing for rich flavors and tender meat.

The Competition Structure

The competition will feature 10 teams, including a representative from Okinawa and last year's champions from Osaka. Each pitmaster will be judged based on six criteria: visual appeal, aroma, flavor, meat preparation, side dishes, and plate presentation, with a total scoring system of 540 points. This year’s panel of judges will include notable experts from the American Meat Export Federation (USMEF), a well-known Japanese food researcher, and several experienced pitmasters, ensuring a fair and comprehensive assessment of the dishes.

Enjoy the Backyard BBQ Bash

Simultaneously, attendees at the HARUMI Backyard BBQ Bash will have the chance to taste authentic BBQ dishes from four different food stalls. The menu boasts classics like brisket, pulled pork, and original smoked sausages. Furthermore, visitors can enjoy a unique experience of sampling dishes that have rarely been served in Japan, making this a must-visit event for BBQ lovers.

Deepening Understanding of BBQ Culture

The event serves to enlighten the Japanese public about American BBQ culture, a culinary genre with varying recipes and techniques unique to different regions and families. By introducing these flavors and cooking methods, the organizing committee aims to boost awareness and expand the fan base for American BBQ in Japan.

Exciting Prizes and Attractions

The premier prize for the BBQ Cook-off winner is a Smoky Mountain Cooker sponsored by WEBER-STEPHEN PRODUCTS JAPAN. This charcoal smoker is designed for those who want to replicate the low and slow cooking style that characterizes traditional American BBQ.

In addition to delicious BBQ, attendees can participate in the American BBQ Show, where they will learn about BBQ cooking techniques and enjoy live demonstrations. Popular radio hosts and BBQ experts will be present to share tips and engage with the audience. For craft beer enthusiasts, there will be booths featuring American craft beers that pair perfectly with BBQ delicacies. Another exciting activity includes a cornhole experience, a casual yet entertaining beanbag toss game suitable for participants of all ages.
