Annual Gala Celebrates Progress in Suicide Prevention
On May 7, an inspiring evening of hope will unfold at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. Hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), the 37th Annual Lifesavers Gala is set to attract hundreds of attendees dedicated to celebrating advancements in suicide prevention.
The event will honor a distinguished group of changemakers and researchers who have significantly contributed to mental health advocacy. Among the honorees are two-time U.S. National Figure Skating Champion and Olympic medalist Gracie Gold, renowned television personality Carson Daly, and Phil and Donna Satow, founders of The JED Foundation. Additionally, researchers Dr. Jane Pearson and Dr. Holly Wilcox will receive accolades for their groundbreaking work in suicide prevention research.
Honoring Key Figures in Mental Health
Gracie Gold, having openly shared her mental health struggles, will receive the Public Service Lifesaver Award. Her candid conversations about mental health aim to foster a supportive environment for those in need. In her words, 'Mental health affects everyone, regardless of who you are or what you do.'
Carson Daly, co-host of NBC's TODAY and The Voice, will be awarded the Public Education Lifesaver Award for his commitment to raising awareness of mental health issues. He emphasizes the importance of open discussions about mental health, stating, 'The more we talk about it, the less heavy it feels.'
The Humanitarian Lifesaver Award will be presented to Phil and Donna Satow, whose personal loss initiated their mission to reduce suicide rates among young adults. Their foundation focuses on providing resources and support for mental health in educational institutions, thereby impacting countless lives.
Dr. Jane Pearson will receive the Lifetime Research Award for her extensive work with the National Institute of Mental Health, while Dr. Holly Wilcox will be acknowledged with the Annual Research Award for her influential projects on early intervention and continuous support systems in suicide prevention.
A Night of Community and Support
The Lifesavers Gala is more than just an awards ceremony; it serves as a cornerstone for gathering resources to support suicide prevention initiatives. Proceeds from this event directly fund AFSP's research, public education, and advocacy efforts aimed at creating a society that is informed and proactive about mental health issues. The event is designed to cultivate a sense of community, as attendees come together to share their experiences and support one another in the fight against suicide.
The Gala will be chaired by Peter Fang from Johnson & Johnson, emphasizing the collaboration between corporate sponsors and nonprofit organizations in promoting mental health awareness. Other sponsors include Crowe LLP, The Columbia Lighthouse Project, NRx Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and The Ortus Foundation.
AFSP’s CEO, Robert Gebbia, notes the importance of this gathering. 'AFSP's annual Lifesavers Gala is an opportunity to come together, reflect on the past year's accomplishments in our field, and raise much-needed funds that will help save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.'
With local chapters in all 50 states and a dedicated advocacy office in Washington, D.C., AFSP is committed to a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention. As attendees prepare for this impactful evening, there is a shared understanding that through education, support, and research, lives can be saved.
This year’s Lifesavers Gala promises to be a poignant reminder of the ongoing battle against suicide, and the collective efforts to create a safer, more supportive world for those struggling with mental health challenges.
