RWE and Indiana Michigan Power Collaborate to Meet Electricity Demand

In a bold move to address the growing electricity demand in Indiana, RWE and Indiana Michigan Power Company (IM) have signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for a substantial 200 megawatt (MW) energy project located in Blackford County. This partnership aims to ensure affordable, reliable electricity for local customers while supporting the sustainable development of the energy sector.

Construction Phase Underway

As of December 2025, construction work on the Prairie Creek project is actively taking place, with operations projected to commence in 2028. Once fully operational, this facility is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 42,000 homes in Indiana, significantly contributing to the state’s energy needs.

The agreement, which spans 15 years, allows IM to purchase the generated power from Prairie Creek, a strategic move designed to diversify its energy resources. Ingmar Ritzenhofen, Chief Commercial Officer of RWE Clean Energy, emphasized the importance of the project in supporting Indiana's comprehensive energy strategy. "Projects like Prairie Creek help bring needed power to the grid while also driving investment and job creation in the Hoosier State," he stated.

Economic Benefits for Blackford County

Throughout its construction and operational phases, the Prairie Creek project is set to act as a key economic driver for Blackford County. With around 240 workers expected to be employed at its peak construction, the initiative is poised to create numerous local job opportunities. The project is also welcomed by local farmers, providing them stable rental income, which supports their agricultural endeavors and opportunities to enhance their financial resilience.

Not only will the project bolster income for local farming families, but it will also play a critical role in funding essential services. Over its lifespan, Prairie Creek is projected to contribute $60 million in property tax payments, which will support local schools, roads, first responders, and more. Additionally, an estimated $10 million in economic development payments will further enhance local businesses.
