On September 16, 2026, the National Hispanic Health Foundation (NHHF) hosted a pivotal event in Washington, D.C., bringing together leading healthcare professionals, students, policymakers, and partners for its annual Leadership Reception. This gathering not only celebrated the dedication of health leaders but also marked the official launch of the NHHF Action Fund, an initiative designed to advocate for health equity across various communities.

The conference took place at The University Club, a prestigious venue that set the tone for discussions centered around health leadership and the pressing issues affecting Hispanic communities. The event was highlighted by the presentation of the Hispanic Health Leadership Awards, which recognized outstanding contributions in the field. Among the honorees were Congressman Raúl Ruiz, M.D. (CA-25) and Carl Garrett, a former executive at Centene. Their efforts in promoting better healthcare access and equality were commendable and served as an inspiration for attendees.

In addition to the awards, the NHHF showcased its Leadership Physician Fellows, a group of medical professionals who had just completed a comprehensive one-year executive training program, as well as scholarship recipients pursuing health sciences education. This initiative represents a critical investment in nurturing future leadership within the healthcare sector, particularly from communities that are often underrepresented.

Dr. Elena V. Ríos, the founder and President of NHHF, expressed pride in launching the Action Fund during the reception. “The NHHF Action Fund will concentrate on advocacy and policies aimed at increasing health equity, stemming from our initial Capitol Hill Day, which connected health professionals with legislators to discuss pressing issues affecting Hispanic and disadvantaged communities,” she stated. Andrés Ramírez, the president of the NHHF Action Fund, highlighted that this initiative is a vital step forward in promoting health advocacy and policies intended to uplift the health of Hispanic communities nationwide. Another significant moment of the event was the awarding of the Hispanic Health Leadership Award to Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) during the Capitol Hill Day activities. Following her recognition, Senator Cortez Masto remarked, “It is an honor to receive the Hispanic Health Leadership Award from the NHHF, an organization that tirelessly works to ensure that Hispanic communities can access quality healthcare. As Latinos are often underrepresented in our healthcare system, I will always be their voice in the Senate advocating for lower costs and more accessible healthcare.” Her acknowledgment of systemic inequalities in healthcare highlights the ongoing struggles faced by many in achieving adequate health services.
