The Shimia Nord Legacy Grant: A New Hope for Families in Need

The Northern Lights Foundation has recently announced a heartwarming initiative known as the Shimia Nord Legacy Grant. Established in honor of Shimia Nord, who bravely fought cancer until her passing in September 2025 at just 18 years old, this grant offers much-needed support to families grappling with life-threatening childhood illnesses. With an annual award of $5,000, the foundation aims to ease the financial pressures that these families experience during their toughest times.

Honoring a Remarkable Life

Shimia's journey was marked by an infectious smile and a spirit that spread joy wherever she went. A graduate of Duluth East High School, she was known not just for her academic achievements but also for her commitment to helping others. Shimia’s legacy is now preserved through this grant, created during March, which is recognized as Kidney Cancer Awareness Month, to highlight the disease she faced with unimaginable courage.

Rikelle Hendrickson, Shimia's mother, expressed the profound impact of her daughter's life and the importance of this grant. “Our family made a promise to Shimia that her legacy of helping others would never be forgotten. This grant fulfills that promise,” she remarked, emphasizing how Shimia lived with joy and purpose even in the face of significant adversity.

A Grant with Purpose

The Shimia Nord Legacy Grant has been designed to be unrestricted, giving families the freedom to allocate the funds according to their immediate needs. Whether it's for medical treatments, travel expenses to hospitals, or essential living costs, families can utilize this grant as they see fit. This flexibility is vital, especially when families are navigating the emotional and financial strain of a serious illness.

Ken Larson, the founder and chair of the Northern Lights Foundation, highlighted Shimia’s essence when he said, “Her life was an example of courage and care for others. Through this legacy grant, we honor her story and continue her mission of spreading hope, support, and light.” The Foundation has a long history of assisting families with children facing critical health issues, having provided relief to hundreds of families over its 19-year tenure.

Upcoming Application Process

Each year, the grant will be awarded in October to coincide with Shimia's birthday. The funding will stem from a combination of contributions, including a personal donation from Dr. Ken Larson and his family, as well as an endowment from Shimia's friends and family. Those interested in applying can find the necessary details on the Northern Lights Foundation's website or by reaching out directly to their office.

Continuing Shimia’s Legacy

The Shimia Nord Legacy Grant is more than just financial support; it embodies the spirit of a young girl whose life inspired many. Shimia's impact will live on through this initiative, offering hope and assistance to families during their most challenging times.

For families in the Northland affected by childhood illness, the Shimia Nord Legacy Grant offers not only financial relief but a reminder of the resilience and compassion that can flourish even amidst hardship. As Shimia’s story continues to inspire, this grant ensures that her legacy of kindness and support will shine brightly for years to come.
