In June each year, the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute joins cancer centers and organizations nationwide in recognizing National Cancer Survivors Month. This month is dedicated to celebrating the resilience of cancer survivors and raising awareness about the importance of early detection and effective treatment options.

The Importance of Celebration

A cancer survivor is defined as someone who has a history of cancer, starting from the time of their diagnosis and extending throughout their lifetime. National Cancer Survivors Month is more than just a commemoration; it serves as a platform to honor countless individuals who have triumphed over cancer and to encourage those currently battling the disease. This year, Karmanos is proud to spotlight the incredible bravery of survivors and the continuous advancements in cancer treatment that contribute to their success.

Rising Survivor Counts

Recent statistics illustrate a remarkable increase in the number of cancer survivors in the U.S. As of January 2022, over 18.1 million individuals with a history of invasive cancer were living, a figure expected to rise to 26 million by 2040. This increase can largely be attributed to advancements in cancer screening, effective treatments, and awareness campaigns. Notably, the overall five-year relative survival rate for all cancers saw a jump from 49% in the mid-1970s to 69% for cancers diagnosed between 2014 and 2020.

In Michigan, the American Cancer Society anticipated that over 66,000 people would be diagnosed with cancer in 2025 alone. The most frequently diagnosed cancers among men include colorectal, lung, prostate, and skin cancers, while women commonly face breast, colorectal, lung, cervical, endometrial, ovarian, and skin cancers.
