Saxony and Arizona Strengthen Semiconductor Partnership for Future Growth

Saxony and Arizona Strengthen Semiconductor Partnership

In a significant move for the semiconductor industry, Saxony and Arizona have announced plans to deepen their collaborative efforts aimed at fostering growth and innovation. This partnership marks a pivotal development, as both regions have emerged as global hotspots for semiconductor manufacturing and technology advancements.

The announcement was made during the SEMICON West trade fair, held in San Francisco from October 13 to 15, 2026, where representatives from Saxony Trade & Invest Corp. (WFS) and the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA) came together to explore mutual opportunities for cooperation. As the semiconductor landscape continues to evolve, both Saxony and Arizona are strategically positioning themselves to take advantage of the burgeoning market.

Thomas Horn, the CEO of Saxony Trade & Invest, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, "Arizona and Saxony are among the world’s leading microelectronics hubs, where new semiconductor production capacities are rapidly being established. We view closer cooperation as pivotal for enabling our companies to better access crucial markets."

The benefits of this partnership extend beyond chip manufacturing. As the demand for skilled workforce, suppliers, and research facilities grows, so do the opportunities for both regions to collaborate effectively. With Arizona being a key semiconductor market in the U.S. and Saxony holding a prominent position in Europe, this partnership could yield significant advantages for companies operating in both areas.

Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority, echoed Horn's sentiments by noting the immense value derived from strengthening connections between their respective ecosystems. "As our sectors grow, fostering deeper links between companies, research institutions, and talent pools is essential," she remarked.

The collaboration was officially launched with a Transatlantic Executive Dinner, which took place on the eve of the trade fair. This gathering served as a networking platform for executives in the semiconductor field and provided an opportunity for representatives from both Saxony and Arizona's business and academic sectors to discuss potential collaborations.

Arizona's Semiconductor Landscape

Arizona is experiencing remarkable growth in its semiconductor sector, with substantial investments flowing into the region. Since 2020, over 70 projects focused on semiconductor expansion and new site development have been initiated in Arizona, amounting to investments exceeding $314 billion. This influx of capital encompasses the complete value chain, from manufacturing to advanced packaging and research.

Looking ahead, Phoenix is set to become the permanent host city for SEMICON West starting in 2027, further solidifying Arizona’s place as a vital hub in the global semiconductor industry.

Saxony's Investment Initiatives

On the other side, Saxony is also undergoing significant investments that solidify its status as a key player in semiconductor manufacturing in Europe. Remarkably, about a third of Europe’s chips are produced in Saxony. Notably, in July 2026, Infineon inaugurated its new Smart Power Fab in Dresden, which represented a robust investment of €5 billion. Additionally, GlobalFoundries has announced it will invest €1.1 billion into its Dresden site, while ESMC is constructing TSMC's first semiconductor manufacturing facility in Europe, attracting an investment of around €10 billion through a collaborative effort involving TSMC, Bosch, Infineon, and NXP.

The expanding ecosystems in both Saxony and Arizona indicate a thriving future for the semiconductor industry, with the potential for innovation, job creation, and further investment. With their strong commitment to collaboration, both regions are poised to lead the way in semiconductor technology and production on a global scale, ensuring that they remain competitive in an ever-evolving market.
