Toyo Seikan's Commitment to Renewable Energy at Shizuoka Factory
Toyo Seikan, a leading packaging company based in Tokyo, has commenced the use of renewable electricity generated from a solar power system installed at its Shizuoka factory. This initiative, which started in March 2025, is part of a collaboration with Tes Engineering Co., Ltd. and Mizuho Toshiba Lease Co., Ltd. The project employs an onsite Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) model, enabling the factory to harness solar energy for its own consumption.
Goals of the Initiative
Toyo Seikan Group is committed to achieving a decarbonized society by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% by 2030, compared to 2019 levels, and aims for carbon neutrality by 2050. The introduction of renewable energy sources plays a crucial role in reaching these ambitious targets. More information on the group's sustainability efforts can be found on their
website.
Details of the Project
Under the project, Tes Engineering is responsible for the installation and management of the solar power system on the factory's rooftop, providing renewable energy to meet the facility's electricity needs. The total generation capacity of the system is approximately 1.6 MW, with an estimated annual output of around 1,919 MWh. This is expected to reduce GHG emissions by about 810 tons of CO₂ annually.
One of the significant advantages for Toyo Seikan is that there is no need for upfront investment regarding the solar power system. Moreover, the onsite PPA model offers a stable energy supply for the long term, independent of fluctuations in electricity demand or fuel issues. The system also incorporates a battery storage solution (three units of 15 kWh each), allowing for power supply during outages, which means that non-production electrical equipment can still be utilized.
The solar energy generated is directly chargeable to the batteries, which aligns with Toyo Seikan's goals for decarbonization and business continuity planning (BCP).
Furthermore, this initiative has received approval for funding through a project aimed at reducing costs related to solar energy installations, which includes self-consumption solar power systems and energy storage solutions. More details on this funding can be found
