LONGi Sets New World Record with 35.5% Efficiency in Solar Cell Technology

LONGi Achieves Groundbreaking Solar Cell Efficiency

In a remarkable announcement at the 2026 Solar and Energy Storage Innovation Conference, LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd. has shattered records by achieving a conversion efficiency of 35.5% in its independently developed crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells. This new efficiency record has been certified by the European Solar Test Installation (ESTI), further cementing LONGi's position as a leader in the renewable energy sector.

The New Milestone

The new record represents a significant leap forward for tandem solar cell technology, which is seen as the pathway to next-generation ultra-high-efficiency solar cells. These tandem cells boast a theoretical efficiency ceiling of 43%, far surpassing the traditional Shockley–Queisser limit of 33.7% typically associated with single-junction cells.

LONGi's journey to this achievement has been built upon continuous technological advancements. Back in November 2023, they had already reached an impressive efficiency of 33.9%, which they improved to 34.6% by June 2024. Over the next few months, rapid progress was made, culminating in a series of incremental gains that brought the efficiency from 34.85% to 35.2% and now to the groundbreaking 35.5%.

Highlighting Industrial Potential

The company's previous achievements included a two-terminal crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cell that was recognized in the 68th edition of the Solar Cell Efficiency Tables, led by Professor Martin Green at the University of New South Wales. This represented a significant milestone that highlighted the technology's potential.

Additionally, LONGi has been effective in demonstrating the industrial scalability of their technology. They achieved conversion efficiencies of 34.3% in a sizeable cell measuring 261 cm² and 32.2% in a slightly larger cell of 274 cm². This shows the promising prospects for large-scale production of tandem technology.

Moreover, LONGi's tandem modules, which were also independently verified, reported conversion efficiencies of 31.4% and 29.4%, both included in the officially recognized efficiency tables. These milestones indicate a strong foundation for facilitating the transition from laboratory to commercial production of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem technology.

Paving the Way for the Future

LONGi's holistic approach to research and development has set it apart in the renewable energy landscape. The company has instituted a tiered R&D strategy focusing on having one technology in mass production, one in development, and another in future reserve. This strategic framework underlines LONGi's commitment not only to innovation but also to the high-quality advancement of clean energy solutions.

With strong technological innovation prowess, LONGi aims to continue as a front-runner in the solar energy sector by developing more breakthroughs. Looking ahead, they remain committed to their vision of achieving technological leadership while contributing significantly to the global energy transition.

This latest accomplishment reaffirms LONGi's position at the forefront of the renewable energy revolution, showcasing its relentless pursuit of efficiency and sustainability in solar technology. As the world increasingly turns towards cleaner energy sources, LONGi's innovations may well set the standard for future solar cell technologies.
