EY Japan Launches OSINT-Driven Consulting for Economic Security Decisions

EY Japan's New Consulting Service for Economic Security



In a world increasingly fraught with geopolitical risks and economic uncertainties, the role of consulting in informing corporate and governmental decisions has never been more crucial. Starting July 1, 2023, EY Strategy and Consulting, based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, officially launched a new service that aims to assist clients with economic security-related decision-making by harnessing Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) in conjunction with policy information.

What is OSINT?


OSINT, or Open Source Intelligence, is a method of gathering and analyzing publicly available information to create actionable intelligence. By integrating this approach with relevant policy information, EY aims to provide a comprehensive consulting service designed to assess risks associated with particular countries and evaluate concerns such as compliance with sanction lists.

The Need for Enhanced Economic Security


The impetus for this service stems from the rising volatility in international relations, which has heightened the necessity for companies to focus on economic security. In Japan, safeguarding strategic autonomy and essential supply chains has become imperative. Companies now face increasing risks related to industrial espionage and potential information breaches, particularly from foreign entities.

From 2025 onwards, the requirement for companies seeking certification under the new security clearance system will mandate the clarification of substantial shareholders, putting additional pressure on firms to verify the legitimacy of their stakeholders.
