Dominican Hospital Celebrates the Beginning of New Internal Medicine Residency Program

Dominican Hospital Welcomes New Internal Medicine Residents

On July 28, 2026, Dominican Hospital, part of Dignity Health, proudly hosted a White Coat Ceremony for its latest cohort of Internal Medicine residents. This significant event, held in partnership with the Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), symbolizes the new residents' transition from academic study into clinical practice, marking a crucial milestone in their medical journeys.

Christine McSweeney, the Hospital President, expressed her joy at seeing the new residents take their pledge, highlighting the importance of this collaboration with MSM. She stated, "This partnership is fundamental to addressing critical healthcare needs" in the community. Each resident's journey in donning the white coat represents a vital step towards a shared vision of training compassionate and culturally competent physicians.

This ceremony acknowledges the dedication of the current cohort, marking them as emerging leaders in healthcare. Since its inception, the collaboration between Dominican Hospital and MSM has successfully brought 24 new physicians into the community, enhancing local healthcare services. The inaugural class that began in July 2024 will have its first group of graduates in June 2027. The recent ceremony honored residents who are about to embark on their rigorous three-year training program focused on culturally humble practices.

This groundbreaking Medical Residency Program is part of a larger initiative called the More in Common Alliance (MiCA), formed by both MSM and CommonSpirit Health, which oversees Dignity Health. The aim of MiCA and CommonSpirit Health is to advance medical education while also increasing the number of healthcare providers who have been historically underrepresented in medicine.

Dominican Hospital is not just focusing on this newer cohort; it continues to expand its medical team significantly. In addition to the residents, it will welcome 10 new physicians across various specialties, including family medicine, OB/GYN, and Hospitalist roles. The hospital is actively working on recruiting additional candidates to bolster its healthcare offerings even further.

Dignity Health California comprises a robust network of over 9,000 physicians and more than 35,000 employees, managing 29 acute care hospitals and over 200 additional care centers. As part of a recognized nonprofit health organization, Dignity Health California is dedicated to providing high-quality, compassionate care, particularly to underserved populations.

In conclusion, the White Coat Ceremony at Dominican Hospital not only celebrates the individual achievements of the new residents but also strengthens the commitment to fostering a new generation of physicians dedicated to serving their communities. The collaborative efforts between Dominican Hospital and Morehouse School of Medicine demonstrate a promising future for healthcare, aimed at addressing the diverse needs of populations.
