In an exciting announcement, the Tokyo Bento, crafted by
JR East Japan Cross Station Foods, clinched the coveted gold award in the station and in-flight meal category at the
16th Fabex Delicacy and Bento Grand Prix 2025. This prestigious event, presented by the
Japan Food Newspaper, celebrated culinary excellence in the realm of Japanese food offerings. Held at the
Tokyo Big Sight, the award ceremony showcased the premium quality of bento options available across the country, with the Tokyo Bento standing out among 1,408 competing products across nine categories.
The Tokyo Bento aims to encapsulate the essence of Tokyo's unique flavors. Launched in 2002, the product was created from a deep desire to craft a signature
station bento representative of the bustling metropolis. What sets it apart is its commitment to authenticity — not just in taste but also in presentation. The breathtaking design of the packaging reflects the iconic
Marunouchi Station Building, ensuring that those enjoying this meal are presented with a piece of Tokyo itself.
After four and a half years, the Tokyo Bento is set for a brand new look and taste refresh slated for
April 2024. This updated version will allow customers to experience flavors from
seven of Tokyo's most esteemed traditional restaurants, all within a single bento box. This dedication to quality and local flavor will undoubtedly elevate the experience for bento enthusiasts.
To mark this achievement, JR East will replace the standard packaging with a limited-edition design that features the gold award logo, further enhancing the bento’s appeal. The product will be available at various locations, including
Tokyo Station's Ekibenya, Shinjuku Station, and Ueno Station, for the price of
2,000 yen (tax included). Furthermore, selected department stores such as
Nihombashi Takashimaya and
Isetan Tachikawa will also carry this award-winning meal, allowing even more customers to savor the taste of Tokyo.
The Fabex event is a prestigious exhibition dedicated to
ready-made meals and
eating-out sectors, and it attracts food industry professionals from all over Japan. Recognizing only the best, this year saw
25 gold awards awarded in various categories, highlighting the culinary diversity and creativity found in Japan’s bento offerings.
