Zambia's Largest Renewable Energy Project Kicks Off with Presidential Support
Leopards Hill Solar and Battery Storage Project Launched in Zambia
On April 21, 2026, Zambia marked a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey with the launch of the Leopards Hill Solar and Battery Storage Project. This landmark project is set to become Zambia's largest hybrid renewable energy development, combining a robust 250 MWp solar photovoltaic plant with a 150 MW/600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). President Hakainde Hichilema officiated the launch, underscoring the government's unwavering commitment to diversifying the country's energy mix and bolstering national grid stability.
The project, located approximately 25 kilometers southeast of Lusaka, in the Kyindu Ranch area, is being developed by Globeleq, a leading independent power producer in Africa, in collaboration with Leopard Investment Company. This partnership not only ensures responsible land use practices but also facilitates meaningful benefits for local communities. It is anticipated that the project will create between 200 to 250 jobs for Zambians during peak construction, with numerous job opportunities available once the plant is operational.
Project Features and Impact
One of the significant advantages of the Leopards Hill project is its ability to provide energy equivalent to the electricity consumption of about 150,000 households annually. By integrating large-scale solar power generation with a state-of-the-art battery energy storage system, the project aims to support peak demand, enhance grid voltage and frequency stability, and ensure a reliable power supply for the growing needs of Zambia’s population and industry.
During the ceremonial launch, notable attendees included the British High Commissioner to Zambia, H.E. Rebecca Terzeon, the Minister of Tourism, Hon. Rodney Sikumba—who is also the acting Minister of Energy—and various key stakeholders alongside local community representatives. The event reflected a strong unity towards advancing Zambia’s energy sector.
Strategic Goals and Community Involvement
Globeleq has openly expressed its aim to actively participate in Zambia’s energy landscape, leveraging existing infrastructure such as the Leopards Hill Substation. By combining this new initiative with a 51% stake in the Lunsemfwa Hydro Power Company, which connects to the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), Globeleq is significantly enhancing its energy portfolio in the region.
In a key move on the sidelines of the launch, Globeleq and ZESCO, the national grid operator, entered into a Grid Connection Agreement (GCA), securing the necessary export capacity for the project and fortifying their partnership. These partnerships serve as strategic avenues to ensure a reliable and diversified energy supply while promoting sustainable growth for the region.
Government's Commitment to Clean Energy
During the launch, President Hichilema emphasized the critical role that renewable energy projects like Leopards Hill play in unlocking economic growth, facilitating industrialization, and improving the overall quality of life for Zambians. He reaffirmed the government's dedication to accelerating investments in clean and reliable energy infrastructure—an essential component in achieving long-term economic sustainability.
Globeleq's Chief Executive Officer, Jonathan Hoffman, highlighted that the Leopards Hill project exemplifies the company's commitment to providing tailored power solutions for major customers throughout Zambia and the Southern African region. He noted that this initiative further strengthens the country's energy capacity while enabling sustained growth in key sectors, including mining.
Furthermore, High Commissioner Terzeon reinforced the UK’s support for Zambia's energy vision. She stated, “The United Kingdom is proud to support Zambia’s vision for a cleaner, more resilient energy system. Projects like Leopards Hill demonstrate how strong partnerships between government and responsible UK-linked investors can unlock sustainable growth and expand access to reliable power.”
As Zambians celebrate the launch of this world-class renewable energy project, it signifies not only a transition towards cleaner energy but also a hopeful step towards a sustainable economic future. The Leopards Hill Solar project embodies the potential of renewable resources, and with continued investments and community involvement, Zambia is well on its way to becoming a leader in clean energy initiatives.
