GIAHS Recognition for Deqing's Aquaculture

On October 31, 2023, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) held a ceremony in Rome, Italy, where representatives from Deqing, Huzhou, located in Zhejiang Province, were honored with a blue certificate. This event marked the official inclusion of Deqing’s integrated freshwater pear mussel fishery system into the prestigious list of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS). This accolade not only acknowledges Deqing’s long-standing tradition in freshwater pearl cultivation, which dates back over 800 years to the Southern Song Dynasty, but also highlights the unique combined aquaculture system that the region has developed over the centuries.

The GIAHS recognition serves as a testament to the sustainability and ecological balance fostered by this innovative aquaculture method. The freshwater pear mussel system integrates various aquatic species, ensuring a natural ecological cycle that promotes environmental conservation alongside economic viability.

Historical Significance of Deqing

Deqing is famously known as a historical hub for the artificial cultivation of freshwater pearls. During the UNGeoNow event on October 22, 2023, Dejan Jakovljevic, Director for Digitalization and Informatics at FAO, emphasized the importance of digital technology in heritage conservation. He noted that digital tools can greatly enhance the scientific approach to preserving cultural heritage like that of the pear mussel ecosystem. By employing modern technology, there is potential not only to safeguard the age-old practices of pearl farming but also to rejuvenate them, introducing new life into the community and industry by promoting the
