Transforming Retail: Scientific Games Upgrades Lottery Operations for Western Canada

In a significant advancement for lottery operations, Scientific Games has announced its new suite of advanced retail technology aimed at modernizing in-store transactions and streamlining processes for the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC). This initiative targets the extensive network of over 5,000 retailers situated across the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, as well as associate members in Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.

The initiative is part of a larger strategy to enhance lottery retail technology and is informed by a new contract with WCLC. Through this partnership, Scientific Games aims to strengthen its position as a leader in lottery retail technology by offering retail systems and terminal solutions to more than 70 lotteries globally, including multiple Canadian entities. The company has a proven record of executing large-scale technology modernization projects in regions like the U.S., Europe, the UK, and New Zealand.

Chris Santschi, President and CEO of WCLC, emphasized the importance of strategic investments in retail operations to improve player experience and maximize benefits for the community and government. He noted that the collaboration with Scientific Games represents a vital step in rolling out next-generation retail systems and software, which will bolster retail performance, enhance engagement with players, and support the sustainability of lottery revenues in the long term.

Part of WCLC's modernization efforts includes the introduction of a comprehensive retail ecosystem. This will consist of:
  • - WAVE point-of-sale terminals designed for retailers
  • - PlayCentral self-service kiosks that utilize AI and advanced analytics
  • - Cutting-edge retailer terminal software

Michael Cardell, Senior VP of Commercial Strategy & Growth at Scientific Games, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to continue collaborating with WCLC. He remarked on the company's commitment to delivering an integrated suite of retail technologies designed to improve player experiences, enhance retailer performance, and adapt operations for future success.

Scientific Games has been a partner of WCLC since 1999, providing essential services such as the Lottery's central gaming system. Recently, they secured a contract for the WCLC's iLottery solution, further solidifying their collaborative efforts in this space. In 2025, WCLC achieved record sales exceeding $1.56 billion, signaling its second-highest sales year and generating significant returns exceeding $481 million for its members.

As the largest lottery games company worldwide and the fastest-growing lottery systems technology provider in North America, Scientific Games delivers comprehensive games, technologies, analytics, and services to over 150 lotteries across 50 countries. Their ongoing innovations in game design, data analytics, retail solutions, and iLottery technologies continue to set benchmarks in the gaming industry, supported by a foundation of trust established since 1973.

With this modernization initiative, the WCLC and Scientific Games are not only enhancing operational efficiency but also paving the way for enriched lottery experiences that resonate well with players and stakeholders alike.
